I've always hated this book and the message it sends. That never satisfied boy takes and takes and takes all the tree is willing to give and at the end comes back to sit on her stumpy carcass. A good example of how a child should not treat his mother.

Great story to read with the little ones at bedtime. Very soothing narrative and soft, but realistic, colorful and often luminous pictures.

i love david sedaris. i need to read this one and all his others again very very soon. no one is better at making you laugh(out loud), cry, cringe and feel absolute heartbreak all in one (true) story. fabulous
Read this before I went to see the movie. Once again, the novel was better than its screen adaptation. Incredibly moving.

Nitobe was an interesting cat, a Japanese Christian, and one of the very first "international" Japanese to try and explain the soul of Japan. Japanese certainly think about some things differently than "westerners", but it always makes me uncomfortable when the differences are emphasized. Never sure how many stars to give this one. Depends on how I feel about Japan that day.

'The Shack' was recommended to me by my mother who could not say enough good things about it. I had to call her and tell her what I thought of the book before posting this review so she didn't find out via review that I... just didn't feel the same way about it. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the book to a certain degree; it definitely wasn't the worst novel I've ever read. Maybe it was the way the story was presented or the topic isn’t something I felt too close to, but to me it felt as though somebody came to my door and was trying to convince me that this is the way -it- is. I found it subtly preachy in the sense that this was what the author may think about religion, God, and our relationship with him, but it isn’t a topic that can readily be understood; something people of faith just need to believe in instead of understand. Of course, this novel wasn’t saying “This is the way it is” as it is a work of fiction, but the author’s feelings towards God and religion were very clear. Because I’m more sceptical and would not identify myself as a religion person, this story was lost on me sort of like a dream sequence that fades and is forgotten. I’ve heard people’s unrelenting beliefs before and this was just one more of them. Although I really didn’t connect with this novel, I do feel that an important message was presented that makes people think, and that could be the sole purpose of the novel itself. I just found it hard to get into a novel were the character dines with God, Jesus, and Sarayu as if it were the most natural thing in the world; where he walks on water with Jesus. I found myself wondering where everything was going, waiting for something to happen that strikes me. I just didn’t really find it and the ending, I feel, was weak compared to the weight of the message the rest of the novel describes. Sorry, Mom. :(

At the beginning of this book, it seemed like Leah had the perfect family. She met Todd, a bad influence, and this book showed how this affected the whole family. I liked it, it seemed realistic, I think teens would like it and relate.
