Of all Herriot's books, this is the least humorous, the most poignant and tender. Perhaps it is because he writes about his own children, about his own aging and I can identify with his nostalgia. Herriot's studies of human nature are always insightful and his dealings with animals always sure to warm your heart. Some of the best books about animals every written!

unbelievable.. i felt for her and leo so much, the first book to ever make me cry. i love this book, it's so realistic and emotional. for me this book didn't have much of a happy ending, having leo die made me cry soo much! i felt like i understood how she felt about losing a child - though i've never had one. this is my second time reading it and i still cried! i would recommend this to anybody and everybody out there. and emotional story you could never hate.

I was reading this book hurriedly because there was a PBS Production of the novel on tv at the same time that I bought it, around 1975 or so. One of the most beloved tales of all time not to mention the history and background of Russian Czars and aristocracy. Truly terrific and a masterpiece!
