A good read. Deals with issues of family and race in the southern states (past). Made a great bookclub book (we still refer to it a few years later).

This book wasn't my favorite. It just didn't really get my attention and I almost quit halfway through. But I finished it and wasn't that satisfied.

I expected Fast Food Nation to be made up of frightening facts and antecdotes about the production of meat and potatoes, and while that's all there in the book's second half (did you know that until 1997 they fed cattle dead dogs & cats from animal shelters?), the first half concerns the effects of fast food on our cultural landscape; not only the health effects--particularly on children--but the "franchising" of America and the altering of the American landscape, aesthetically and naturally. An enlightening read, though the halting prose style is a bit trying. Learn to use conjunctions and semicolons, jerk!

I read this book when I was 18, starting it while I lived alone in my first apartment and finishing it after I'd given away everything I owned and wa staying in the Grand Canyon. It was that pivotal for me. As I've been rereading it, I remember exactly where I was when I read certain sentences, and some of them I quote to this day. Knowing what I already know about how it ends lends a certain piquancy missing when it was still mysterious who this Phaedrus fellow was. (I actually took a course in college to read the Phaedrus by Plato because of this book -- much like taking a Newberry course to study Herodotus after reading The English Patient.) I hope it's still as meaningul as it was when I first read it in the blush of my idealistic youth.

Thank you Mark Billingham, you made my dreams come true!! When I read Mark Billingham's stand-alone book 'In the Dark', I became really attached to the stubborn, determined and heavily pregnant police officer and heroine Helen Weeks. I couldn't help thinking what an interesting counterpoint she would be if she ever worked with Tom Thorne, hero of Billingham's other books. Then 'Good As Dead' came along.....Helen Weeks is taken hostage by her local newsagent whose son has supposedly committed suicide in a Young Offenders Institute, but he will not accept this explanation and demands that the only person he trusts to investigate is Thorne. I had worried that if Helen and Tom ever appeared together that Helen might just fade into the background, but she plays a pivotal role is keeping the situation as calm as is possible, despite all the odds. I don't care how 'realistic' the scenario might be, I loved reading it and could hardly put the book/kindle down. Excellent, only now I need more Tom and Helen stories!! :-)

I'm not a real fan of his writing. This is one of the few books I liked in movie form better than book form. I don't really like the story much either -- "true love" allows you to ruin that many lives? Use your brains a bit, kids, and figure out how to be in love and not mess with so many people.

The Twins are still as great as ever and the Imprint between Aphrodite and Stevie Rae was actually pretty funny. The relationship between Kalona and "A-ya" (Z) was interesting to read about. I also love how Z realizes that she is A-ya and Nyx has blessed her with the gift of free will. It shows that if you look deep inside you, you can find who you really are. I thought that it was possible to end the series right here and then. But it just would leave out the big question, "Did they ever really defeat Kalona?"

I found myself disliking the man character of this book, I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't be proud of him for anything.

I'm pretty torn by this book. It really was very funny and where science was used properly, it was actually quite accurate. But, it was one of the most sexist pieces of fiction I've ever read, and I'm rather a fan of Sherlock Holmes. Don't get me wrong, all the characters were painfully stereotyped, but the females seemed that much worse, especially with the witty jokes sprinkled through that were barely above the "why did the woman cross the road? To get to the kitchen" etc variety. Some of the jokes are of a rather tired sort, too, but it was at least clear the author cared at least somewhat about his subject material, going at least far enough to include an authors note about conservation at the end. I might read this author again, but if I did, I would maybe try the Gospel According to Biff, I don't think there'd be many female characters in that.
