Maybe the fact that I read it on a cruise has something to do with how much I loved it. Read... eat... read.. eat... sigh.

I had to snatch this book up after reading the prequel "Ravenous," because the first book was gripping, original, hard-core werewolf intensity! Sure, I was feigning for more back story in the first book and wanted to know how it was that the werewolves in the book were so feral and how the werewolves originated. I had soo many questions that I was expecting to have answered in the sequel. Well, "Bestial" is a different type of book, let me say. It answers some questions I had and introduces even more. There's also some changes. The werewolves have more control over themselves, the sex is less seedy and is instead more raunchy and... bestial. As with the other works by Garton that I have read, there are some tragic deaths and lots of insane happenings. But for folk who like "Ravenous," and I find it to be the better novel, "Bestial" has several main characters, none of whom I cared much for and it's more of an action novel with lots of religious references, rather than the lone-wolf, crazed but charismatic werewolf hunter in the first book. Overall though, it was a good read and not every one is a manic werewolf enthusiast with a hunger for back story. Was it wrong that the most interesting person in the book is the villan...Oh well, I highly await the next Garton monster tale.

In Among the Mad, Winspear returns Maisie Dobbs to normal sleuthing using her skills of mindfulness and observation and leaving aside the magic and mysticism of the last book. This is a vast improvement. This addition to the series addresses the continuing theme of "shell-shock" (PTSD)and depression in more detail, and with real compassion. If you like, you can read into it a critique of the VA's failures to treat Iraq War vets adequately. Now that dousing and gypsy magic are gone, I am looking forward to the next Maisie Dobbs novel.

Um, I got this from the library because I remembered that I was Catholic and then this book seemed to speak to what "catholic writing" was, and I was intrigued. It wasn't bad, it had essays from liberals and conservatives, pro-gay marriage and anti-gay marriage, pro-life and anti-abortion, basically underlining that catholics don't agree on anything. The worst part of the book was that it had entirely too many essays on Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Chist," which came out in '05.

I thought I would enjoy this novel a lot more, given its subject matter. As my profile points out, I am definitely interested in reading about freaks, particularly circus freaks. This novel raises some rather interesting questions concerning the monstrous other, normality vs. difference, family, etc. However, the writing, I think, is a bit stilted at times. The character development is also a bit weak. The premise is certainly an interesting one, but I think the execution was not what it could have been.

I couldn't get into it. By the forth or fifth chapter i should be hooked and i wasn't. The idea of a griffin mage was interesting, but Kes seems to be too flat a character. We know what she's going to do so its hard to cheer for her. I almost wish someone would just tell me how it ends so i don't have to keep slogging through it. Good idea, but for a "page turner" it lacks in movement.

Cover I love the picture on the cover. The photographer captured a moment in time where DiMaggio seems almost content and happy with his second wife, Marilyn Monroe. Plot/Main Character Watching baseball is one of my favorite pasttimes. To get to know more about one of the greatest players, Joe DiMaggio, was a bonus for me. Jerome Charyn has given readers a glimpse into the emotionally reclusive life of the Dago. I almost feel sorry for him. But then I think, "How much of the reclusiveness could he control?" There's no doubt that DiMaggio was one of the greatest and most revered players of our time, but I believe he was emotionally reclusive because he chose to be so. How can one feel sorry for a person who chooses that life? I did not know, however, about his obsessiveness with Marilyn Monroe. That was a surprising and interesting fact to read about. Overall I don't know that this was an enlightning book, but it was informative and interesting to read. This would be a book for baseball fans everywhere ... those that loved the game's players before they became so commercialized.

This was also one of my favorites as a child... If you like "Where The Sidewalk Ends" then you will enjoy this book just the same.
