I really enjoy reading the Lynley mysteries. They are great escapist page turner mysteries.

Ehn. Been reading too many of these 'hip' post-colonial novels. Enough is enough! Why can't we all just get along??? (Poco lit, Prof B; 300 pages)

The curiosities of the circumstances within this book kept me reading it, but I felt it was often strained by it's own attempts to project a moral philosophy. There were certainly some great moral issues to be explored, and while Schlink raises them in the context of the plot, he often dismisses them with a series of rhetorical questions. I would have found the story more intriguing if told from Hanna's point of view

After reading The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt is a slight disappointment. On its own, however, it is a worthwhile fantasy read. I still like the concept of 'the one power' and the seductive nature of its use. The Great Hunt gives much more detail about the use of the one power and showcases many previously unrevealed powers. If you're a teenage girl you might find the romance in this story fascinating. Otherwise, you might get bored because there is sexual tension between almost every male and female that come into contact with each other. Overall, this story kept my attention and entertained me. I wouldn't classify it as one of the best books of all time, but it's a good book. For those who read and loved The Eye of the World, it's fun to see how the story continues.
Wow! That was one hot read! I love stories about couples who are friends first...being friends first works especially well in short reads. It makes it so much more believable when they finally get together. I really loved that Melody was this beautiful and athletic woman--some may call her a tom boy--she could charm the pants off any man with a sexy look one minute and kick his ass on the basketball court the next minute. Love it!! I sometimes have a problem with short reads because they typically lack character development and the story often suffers because it is too rushed. I did not feel that way with this story. I thought the authors did a great job focusing on what was important and didn't litter the story with a lot of unnecessary details. I really thought it was fantastic. I cannot wait to see what Team Cole/Chase has in store for us next. Thank you guys for this copy of Three to Tango. It really was spectacular! ✳✳ Copy provided by the author/publisher for an honest review. ______________________________________________________________________ ✳✳ Reviewed on I ♥ Bookie Nookie Reviews ___________________________________________________ If you like this type of book, you might enjoy one of these groups. 4.5 stars This book is two novellas put together, the first “Mr. Sykes and the Firefly” is told in first person by Belimai Syker who is a Prodigal, descendant of demons, and one of the few with the ability to fly. Belimai is an addict, reliant on ophorium after being captured by the Inquisition and tortured for a confession related to a charge against his friend Nickolas Sariel. Captain William Harper is a priest with the Inquisition and comes to Belimai for help finding his missing sister. Belimai is thrust into the middle of a wild and sordid situation. The second novella, “Captain Harper and the Sixty Second Circle” is told in third person from Harper’s POV. It is a continuation of the events of the first part in a way. Harper is trying to find his place both with his job and in his relationship with a Prodigal. He gets pulled into a murder investigation when an old woman stumbles upon him in the street waiting for a carriage. What Harper uncovers is a thinly veiled conspiracy to hide the truth and put the blame on a Prodigal, and Belimai is on a short list of ‘suspects’. Wicked Gentlemen is a wonderfully fascinating book that I was immersed in from the beginning. The characters are quite well developed and the world created is detailed and complex. The descriptions of both places, Crowncross and Hells Below, are extremely detailed and lead to a truly visceral experience filled with sights, sounds and smells that come alive at every turn. This is a very different type of fantasy/paranormal story that I greatly enjoyed. The real crux of this book is the differences and similarities between Belimai and Harper and how they each navigate their worlds. This is not an easy pairing, and you have to pay attention to see the romantic elements in the story. What the reader is provided with is a detailed fantasy universe and characters that are well developed but also flawed. In a fantasy novel, the last thing you might expect is a depth and root in reality but that is what readers receive here. Each character, at the core, is a man with problems and past that must be overcome. Their present and futures are of course affected and directed by the past. This is not an easy relationship ~ Harper is extremely private and doesn’t share easily while Belimai is determined to remain aloof about the distinguished Captain. But neither can deny the mutual attraction and we are provided with brief glimpses of their pairings. This is not an erotic novel, a fact that I found refreshing, and the reader is instead given just enough details about the men being together. Imagination will easily fill in what isn’t explicitly shown and it’s true to the tone and focus of the book. There are also interesting secondary characters such as Sariel and Harper’s brother-in-law Edward that add weight and emotional connections to the story. The real focus, however, is Belimai and Harper. Getting a chance to digest each character’s POV is appealing and provides a more extensive picture of each of the two main characters. There were bits to the story that I guessed and others that I didn’t but at every turn my attention was held on the unfolding of the gripping story. Hale has created a universe and tone that is carried throughout the story, a hint of historical with fantasy thrown into the mix to make it unique and fascinating. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked up this book but I was pleasantly surprised and discovered an author that I am anxious to read more from. If you are a fan of fantasy stories, I definitely recommend reading this book!
To me, this book is about the importance of story. Martel does not outline why story is important, but he builds it through chapter after chapter of fanciful, magical, quasi-plausible story that drew me in until the cold splash of water at the end of the book. I was able to suspend my disbelief and run with it, and as a result, I feel a much stronger connection to the fanciful story than I do with an easier "reality". At the end, I felt like this would be a great companion piece to "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years."

As much as I love this movie, the book is delightful. William Goldman (who wrote the screenplays to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Stepford Wives (the much better, Katharine Ross version), Marathon Man, All the President's Men and, of course, The Princess Bride) is an absolute riot as an author; the depth provided to Inigo, Buttercup and Westley in the novel is tremendous. This is definitely a must-read!
