This is the least of the Dido Twite novels. It's set after "The Stolen Lake" (which was an EXCELLENT book) but written much later as an insert. Unfortunately this one's a letdown from the start. Dido is almost cardboard in this novel, and it felt like Aiken had forgotten how to write her character. There are scenes that verge on racist. Just give this one a pass and remember Aiken for the first five of the Wolves Chronicles.

loved it. while it is a little graphic, it's written in the 1300's. which was a very graphic time. it's amazing it's all about a cathedral and building things....and it's still a really good book.

Sequel to The Shattered Chain--probably readable without that context, almost certainly better with it. Bradley not only explores feminism in the context of Darkover's often restrictive society--the Order of Renunciates (Free Amazons) specifically exists to show women that they have an alternative, if they should wish to take it--but culture shock. The two, of course, are intertwined. Magda Lorne, as a newly sworn Renunciate, learns the ways of her new sisters; meanwhile, her oath-mother Jaelle, now freemate to a Terran and a Terran employee, struggles with her own heart and tries to understand an alien culture. My one complaint is that Jaelle's freemate Peter/Piedro made me feel murderous; I wish the book had not been so heavy-handed with the characterization.
