It helps that Ms. O'Brien is a journalist and so knows how to put facts together into a linear progression. The book is a well written and accessible overview for those of us whose knowledge of of the eleventh century England stops at the fact that there was one ;) No footnotes, which I find distract from the basic text anyway, but there are end notes and a bibliography- complete with some nice websites- for those with a more scholarly bent to follow up on.

I bought this book from Kmart for myself for Christmas. I didn't know anything about it, but I love reading about the Amish so I figured I would enjoy it. Sure enough, I really did enjoy reading it. It was easy to get into and because it had the entire trilogy included, I didn't have to wait for the sequels. The Amish lifestyle is very intriguing to me.

I’ve wanted to read this trilogy for a long time now. When I was young I remembered my parents watching a TV adaption of this book and it has always stuck in my mind. I can say I have not been disappointed. I loved the idea of a rebellion of a minority few trying to regain control over an alien life force. The whole drama and thrill of whether these three young boys will escape the clutches of the Tripods. It makes for an exciting read. The story centres around the main character Will who is coming of age. Once young people get to a certain age they are sent off in the tripods – which are the aliens in a three legged machine – to be capped. Capping involves a metal plate being put onto the head so that the tripods can control you. The newly capped people are returned to their homes and they are then under the control of the Tripods. Will meets a mysterious stranger who tells him of a life free from capping, where men can think for themselves. But the journey to salvation is dangerous. I really enjoyed this book, and that is saying something! I was never a big history buff in school. If history was taught like this, I'd be all for it!! I absolutely loved that the story was told from Nefertiti's sister Mutny's point of view, it definitely made the story so much better. I enjoyed Mutny's character, her personality, her wisdom, and her love for her family.

Charlotte's main character is a man this time, but, just like the heroines that grace the pages of her other stories, he is a likable fellow whose triumphs and successes are the reader's triumphs and successes.

This novel is powerful and emotional. First off, this isn’t a happy love story. Reason to Breathe definitely has its tender moments full of love and happiness but dread and terror are constantly lurking in the background. Again, this isn’t a light, happy story. It’s the story of a girl who is forced to live with her aunt and uncle after her father passes away and her mother is deemed “unfit”. Her aunt (through marriage) abuses Emma physically and emotionally. She constantly reminds Emma how “worthless” she is. I still can’t fathom how anyone could be so cruel. It’s heartbreaking and painful to watch the pain and abuse unfold through Rebecca Donavan’s words. Note: This book leaves off on a crazy, surprising cliffhanger. It’s one that will have you stalking Rebecca Donavan’s blog daily. Don’t go into this novel expecting closure and a happy ending because you won’t get it. Go into this novel expecting an addicting journey that will completely captivate you and have you begging for more. Overall, I really enjoyed everything about this novel: characters (well the ones who aren’t the reincarnation of the devil), plot, the romance, the suspense, etc. Rebecca Donavan: Thank you so much for not making Sara, Emma’s best friend, the clichéd popular girl. I really enjoyed an attractive, well-liked, wealthy character that has a good personality and a gigantic heart. She is a great, loyal friend to Emma. I gave Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donavan 4 STARS. I strongly recommend this novel to young adult who are looking for a sweet but emotional love story. This novel is great for people who enjoyed Heart on a Chain by Cindy C. Bennett and vice versa. -XOXO READING, EATING AND DREAMING
