A great intro to James, and one of his stronger novels (in my not so humble opinion.) Something gets lost with his denser tomes - I appreciate this gut-wrenching story, and these perfectly studied characters.

A highly educated contributer to MSNBC, Jeannette Walls writes the story of her family. Her mother was a free spirit and father was a brilliant alcoholic. The family moved often and was sometimes just a step away from being homeless. Wall does not ask for pity, rather she relates the children's struggle for survival and escape as well as the love she felt for her father. A good weekend read.

GREAT, clean, well written book. Although the ending was a little predictable, I was enthralled with the story, the vivid characters, and the beautiful landscape painted in my mind. The mountain folks back in the 30's and 40's, and probably even today, struggled considerably and this story makes a person think about what self-sufficiency and productivity really means. It takes a lot to stir up my emotions in any kind of story but the hardships of the two children in this book had me in tears once or twice. It's kind of a slow read, but worthwhile nonetheless.

Who knew Steve Martin could write, too?! You would think the main character would be annoying, but he's not, just extremely sympathetic. I loved this book.
