It's the beginning of the American novel, na? (that's a serious question, not rhetorical.) It's also Mark Twain's magnum opus and genuinely enjoyable to read.

At some point growing up, without discovering any Hispanic writers to express the Latina experience I could relate to, for colored girls... included me in the minority or ethnic experience of looking into the white world. and that was primarly because I felt so outnumbered in my not-quite urban Texas town, reminded how non-Protestant and non-white I was. I hope that to new readers in the future, this book serves more as a reference of what it used to be like, than what young women still feel. I'm an optimist.

There is no living author more densely and romantically lyrical than Cormac McCarthy. I would place his writing just above Denis Johnson, Michael Ondaatje and Don DeLillo, in terms of poetic achievement in prose. Perhaps Carol Maso has a shot, but truthfully, her prose poem books feel too ethereal. McCarthy's books of of the earth, in many ways. Bloodsport as a defining means of cultural expansion (or invasion) is certainly not new news, or even good news, but McCarthy elevates us above the usual politics by scouring the more base and brutal elementals of human nature. He's really good at narrating the bloody grime and muck of conquest and survival. This is a novel where men rise from dust and retreat back in quick and horrifying ways. Grotesques appear alongside the mythological and the mundane, and though borrowing elements of the Western pulp, the apocalyptic backdrop is the same you'd find in the Southern Gothic novels or even his newest book, The Road. Emotions are carried briefly or not at all. There's no room for them. Joy arrives in flashes during battle. Sex is a form of torture. Innocence is devoured, quite literally. And in the end, after scraping the land of all he has not approved, the Devil dances. I remember sitting on the F Train here in NY, on my way to work early morning, so repulsed by what I was reading but so transfixed by the engrossing details and character elaborations that I called in sick and finished the book on the train home.

First, I LOVED the sheep characters and their application of sheepy logic to the human world. Loved their names, too. As someone who enjoys novels like WATERSHIP DOWN and WARRIORS, I thought their way of thinking and relationships to each other were superbly thought out and delightful to read. But as an actual mystery novel, I found it disappointing. I still don't feel like I knew "whodunnit" in one aspect of the story (or even the "why" of another aspect), or the background story running through a lot of it. Instead, the author seemed more interesting in trying to make transcendent moments. The translation seemed solid (though I'd be curious to get my hands on a German language version -- "Glennkill: Ein Schafskrimi"), so I think this deficiency must have been there in the source material--not lost in translation. She's published a sequel in German ("Garou: Ein Schaf-Thriller" -- "Garou: A Sheep Thriller"), and I look forward to reading that when it's translated!

I absolutely didn't care for this book at all. People rave about the musical and I'll get around to seeing it someday, but right now, I am still hung up on this awful book.

this book has one of the more memorable and despicable and pathetic characters i've ever read.

It took a little while to get absorbed into this book. The agonizing sadness and anger of the main character seemed to go on for a long time. However, as other story lines began and the book was hard to put down. The main character finally discovered that even though she was suffering immensely, there were others that were suffering too. Her pain lessened when she finally looked outside herself and understood other's burdens. Her mother was unable to help her daughter because she was overly sensitive and couldn't handle someone else's pain without it becoming her own. Interesting lessons.

Since this is my busy season at work, it took me longer than usual to read this book. When I did have blocks of time to read, I found it somewhat engrossing...interesting character perspectives, quirky references, etc. Then, I got to the last part of the book, and things went weird. I'm all for surprise endings but this was out of left field.
