I enjoyed how the events in the book shaped the main character life, even though he spent most of his life avoiding the memory of it. Very understated, but remarkably poignant. I really want to read Siegfried, his other book about Hitler's secret child!

I read this book when I still had some interest in religion. You don't need to be religious to like this book. Armstrong is a former nun who's abandoned the Church, but still believes in God. The writing is good. The book gives a lot of information about the history and the various schools and sects in the three "great" Abrahamic religions, if you find that sort of information interesting.

Very impressed with this. So many attempts to channel beloved writers fall flat and so I went into this with a fair amount of skepticism. But Horowitz really pulls it off. The writing is terrific --- I was listening to this (narrated by the excellent Derek Jacobi) while running and often wanted to stop and jot down a particularly well-done line. (Siri, I'm afraid, did not understand when I tried. I mean, "house of so bad"? No clue what I wanted to say versus what she thought I said.) Horowitz is a master of description, as much in the style of Dickens as Doyle. The plot was excellent -- very well done indeed.
