Life As We Knew It is written for teen readers. I read it because my ten year old daughter had it sitting on the dining room table. I can't resist a book left alone on the table! Life As We Knew it follows a family living on Earth as it goes through drastic climate change and all other kinds of scariness brought on by the moon being knocked off its axis. So many things that you take for granted (food, sunshine, heat, electricity, neighbors, community and more) disappear from every day life. This book gave me the feeling that I had during childhood after watching The Day After (a television movie about the day after a nuclear war). That movie terrified me because I was probably too young to watch it. This book terrified me in the same way but this time as a grown up that still doesn't want to die! Add on to that the fact that I now have a family that I'm responsible for whether in times of natural disaster or every day happiness and you have a freaked out Mama (admittedly with a very active imagination)! I came to work the morning after reading this book and confided in a coworker how freaked out I was by this kid's book. Needless to say, he thought it was a little hilarious and a little crazy of me to feel this way! I felt better a month or so later when I had a random conversation with another mom at my daughter's school library when she mentioned a book she had read from that very library which gave her nightmares! Well, guess what. It was this book. So, even though I'm one to be against any banning of books, I'm not so against putting this on a shelf your child can't reach for a couple of years, just in case they're wimpy like me! I have to note though that this didn't slightly freak my daughter out. She and I both found it to be a great book. It just gave the grown up in the house a nagging sense of fear and doubt about whether everything is always going to be as we know it.

The language is really tough to follow considering how the author's style is to use at least 10 big words within a sentence but beyond that, his stories are morbid and otherworldly possibly reflecting his insanity, decadence and indulgent desires, degenerative state of health and the depressing romantic experiences he has encountered in his life. I personally love The Masque of the Red Death the most.

This book was entirely engrossing. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm not usually an autobiography or biography reader, but I looove Tim Burton.

My 6 year old son loved this book's short stories about the 7 Habits. The biggest benefit was I found myself using the habits to encourage him, like explaining when he was being proactive or we were synergizing (That is probably not a word. Oh well.) It just made me more aware. We'll probably buy it for our home library.

Wow. I tore through this in two days! Yes, as everyone's said, the writing is so bad as to be painful in places, but the story (and how carefully she reveals it) makes this impossible to put down. Unbelievable how fucked up this situation is.

Scintillating!! Randy's energy, passion, and enthusiasm for acheiving your childhood dreams is infectious! He leaves a remarkable "message in a bottle" for everyone. Sadly, his family and friends lost him but this is quite a little gem that he has left behind. Highly highlighter & sticky note worthy, but some Favorite Lines: -"Brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Sometimes the "brick walls" are people. And it's okay if someone has practically had to throw you over--it can be helpful to others to tell them how you did it." -"Time is all you have. And you may find one day you have less than you think." -"College tuition is not like 'retail'. I'd compare college tuition to paying for a personal trainer at an athletic club". -"Luck is indeed where preparation meets opportunity." -"It's not how hard you hit. It's how hard you get hit...and keep moving forward." -"Go out and do for others what somebody did for you." -And as in Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, when Natalie Portman tells the toymaker (Dustin Hoffman) that he can't die; he has to live. He responds: "I already did that"...Randy certainly did live an inspiring life!!

This is such a balanced account of the build up to the Iraq war. It's great to get a perspective for how Bush makes decisions, and how each member of the administration contributed to policy.
