SUCH A POWERFUL ENDING. This would make an amazing movie, if done right. This book was mildly confusing for the first 200 pages (or maybe just for me -- I was confused by all the old foreign guys doing different things), but things get cleared up really quickly toward the later part of the book, and- just- how things all came together, making the conclusion succinct and bittersweet, and, like I said, just really powerful. And the POEM AT THE END. I always admire a good ending, and Nicole Krauss did a stunning job with this. Just one good excerpt: The grass was slippery with mud. In the distance I could see a rowboat tied to the dock. I looked out across the water. Must have been a good swimmer, took after his father, I thought with pride. My own father, who had great respect for nature, had dropped each of us into the river soon after we were born, before our ties to the amphibians, so he claimed, were cut completely. My sister Hanna blamed her lisp on the trauma of this memory. I'd like to think that I would have done it differently. I would have held my son in my hands. I would have told him, Once upon a time you were a fish. A fish? he'd have asked. That's what I'm telling you, a fish. How do you know? Because I was also a fish. You, too? Sure. A long time ago. How long? Long. Anyway, being a fish, you used to know how to swim. I did? Sure. You were a great swimmer. A champion swimmer, you were. You loved the water. Why? What do you mean, why? Why did I love the water? Because it was your life! And as we talked, I would have let him go one finger at a time, until, without his realizing, he'd be floating without me. And then I thought: Perhaps this is what it means to be a father -- to teach your child to live without you. If so, no one was a greater father than I.

Wow. Talk about an interesting collection--strange sort of combination of self-deprecating patriotism and murky transparency. I mean, these letters really were sent to the presidents, but how representative are they? Look, the National Archives are showing you what they have in their collection!...except that transparency in our government is at an all-time low. Look, we're proclaiming to the world some of the awful trials and dirty scandals this country has gone through!...but we've also surmounted them because this country is the best on earth (where else do people so enthusiastically air their dirty laundry?). But still, it's a pretty book with some pretty stirring communications, especially when put into the context of when it was published (2005). When I read stuff like this, it makes me yearn for that simple, happy time when being patriotic was so easy and fulfilling (elementary school comes to mind).

This is a brave and candid look at the culture of Southie in Boston. I grew up in the Boston area myself in the 80s & 90s and the palpable tension that the author describes from the 70s shed insight into race relations and poverty issues in the area that I never knew the background of. Many of the events I had been largely unaware of previously. The sadness of the true stories profiling many young people, including many of the author's siblings, who lost lives to violence and drug use are moving and enraging at the same time. Highlighting a tight knit community too ashamed of its faults to save its own, opting to instead hold their pride and loose many of their young people.

My father heard a review of this book on MPR and told me that he thought it would be a good book and that I should read it. After tracking it down as it was not at my Library I was able to read it. I absolutely loved this book. It really made you think about everything that had happened in your life and what you might do differently if you could.
