It's a light, frothy romance/mystery. If you like this sort of book in general, you'll probably like this particular book. The mystery aspect is a little weak, but the protagonist is extremely likable. The very ending of the book (the romantic denouement) was way too contrived, however, which left a slightly sour taste in my mouth after reading.

An interesting, captivating book, with lots of developments concerning characters I already care about (as compared to the previous book's more scattered topics). I still miss the more tightly-plotted style of the first three books. It feels frustrating to go through 1100 pages so that more pieces can be set in place. I hope these two books are a divergence from his main style, and come the next one we'll have more payoff and less pacing problems.

(2009 At Least A Book A Week) Week 6 I would rather give this a 4.5 but I guess the star gods can't let me squeeze a half star in there. Speaking of star gods. There aren't any in this book. But actual chimps that are smarter than me. And David Brin is supposedly pretty smart too. He has a PHD in stellar ideas... and I believe physics? Totally enjoyed this one. Can't wait to start the next series.

Such a beautiful book! It's a wonder that I never read it before now. I'd thought of reading it numerous times, but it just never happened. What I love most about the book is how close it is to the natural world, how it makes everything living come alive, and which also happens to be a theme inside the book.

In a not very big surprise, this book won the Newberry award. I need to try to finish it. I finally finished this book today, and found it a confusing experience. I had a hard time sorting out which time any given part was taking place in, and had figured out the ending quite a bit before it arrived, and was surprised it took Miranda so long to figure it out. Now I'm finished with it, I like the book better then when I was reading it, so probably the idea of the book was better then the execution. It read like a twilight zone episode or some other scifi tv show--and it would probably be less confusing as a tv show, where it would be obvious when different scenes were taking place.
