What a mess. I really like the characters in this series. Arthur Bryant, John May, and the others in here are all pretty entertaining and interesting characters. But the plot was just so bad. It starts with four murders, a bit much really, but I was still enjoying the book. Then the bodies keep piling up, the detectives are no nearer solving the case, and there's this extra subplot that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. What is the deal? Jerry, the girl who discovers the first body, obviously knows something, but Bryant and May never question her long enough to get the whole story, and she is never bright enough to tell them what she's really up to. It was just too much to believe. I may or may not read the next in this series, but I'm really disappointed, because Fowler has such an original idea with this one. He just needs to explain things a little better and keep the plots solid, while he keeps the fresh ideas and characters.

I can't say that I loved Jane Green's writing style in Jemima J, but the concepts were somewhat interesting and brainless, so it was a good "I'm sick so I can lie here, not go to the gym, and read junk" book.

I guess I am addicted to this book. I could never climb extreme heights myself due to poor circulation, but I love reading about everything these climbers go through. After this, I tried to find and read everything else by Krakauer.

i read the book after i watched the anime adaptation, and as i expected, the book is better :). not that i think the anime is flawed in any way, i just think that there are strands from the fabric of the story that can only be woven by imaginations rather than colored animation cells.

Anyone who had parents who grew up in Boston heard the story passed down about the great Molasses Flood. It was usually told in an offhand manner, ending with "on a hot day you can still smell the molasses". This is the whole story, and there isn't anything offhand about it. A very good piece of social, as well as labor history. I, of course, ended up taking the book to the scene of the crime and retracing the steps. Fascinating.

One of the best books I've read in a long time-- every word is precious, not only because the author had to spell each one out with the flutter of his eye, but because it makes you realize how precious life is.
