Through his eyes we are forced to open our own to the joys and sorrows of being an adolescent.

4 1/2 stars I knew within a couple pages that I would enjoy this book. If you're looking for high drama, this is not the book for you. It's a lovely quiet family drama about 3 sisters coming back home to help care for their mother with cancer. The only thing that I had a bit of trouble with was what's called the first person plural narrative (I had to look it up). The narrator shifts between the 3 sisters. Once I got used to it, it was fine.

A book about vampires with practically no vampires. Huh. Quick, easy read. I found it extremely hard to ditch my ego and enjoy this one. Although intentionally written in the modern teenage vernacular, the "like totally's" and "omg slut's" were so hard for me to ignore. I found the main character, Zoey, to be just as shallow and vapid as the antagonist and her minions. The only part of this book I was able to stomach was the idea behind the ritual circles, the calling together of the five elements of nature. I was also really into the concept of becoming Marked and having to move somewhere while your body underwent the Change. I was practically 2/3 through the book before the first "vampiric" act was mentioned, and quite obviously being a book about vampires I expected a little more vampires. The book seemed to be more about wicca and neo-paganism, to tell you the truth. [image error] Major annoyance: The vampires eat real food. They have a freaking salad bar. This disappointed me greatly. Also, I went to South Intermediate High School where Mrs. Cast (or Mrs. Hepner, as she is called in real life) teaches. I was never her student, but I do remember a lot of hubbub around the time her first novel was published. This doesn't reflect badly upon the book, but it was bizarre for me to read a lot of my old teacher's names and think of a Vampire Tracker standing by my old, skinny locker in the math hall. I mean, Mr. Shaddox (aka Puff Shaddy) was MY history teacher, PC Cast’s father (Mr. Dick Cast) was MY biology teacher, and Mr. Wise really is clinically insane. I have parked my car in the student parking lot a hundred times, so the book started out familiar. Despite my low opinion of this book, I am taking a friend's advice and reading the next installment because she says it gets better. Although I think I need to read another book first so I can flush out all my negatives and give the sequel a fair chance.
