i found northanger abbey absolutely brilliant! the narration style was very fun to read, always contrasting what should be happening to the heroine of the book with what happens in reality. The story itself could be thought of as plain (girl meets guy, falls in love with him, faces many obstacles, happily ever after). it just the way austen chooses to present the story that makes it interesting and make it thrive in its normalcy. "There was not one lord in the neighbourhood; no — not even a baronet. There was not one family among their acquaintance who had reared and supported a boy accidentally found at their door — not one young man whose origin was unknown. Her father had no ward, and the squire of the parish no children. But when a young lady is to be a heroine, the perverseness of forty surrounding families cannot prevent her. Something must and will happen to throw a hero in her way." i loved how catherine is not heroine material, she is a normal, completely plain girl, with no outstanding qualities and not an interesting situation in life (dead mother, bad father, being too rich or too poor) someone who at other times would become just a side character to a story. what was also very fun about the book is the way that the most intriguing parts to the story were happening only inside catherine's mind, because of her over-active imagination :p last but not least, i found mr tilney's personality the most interesting one in an austen book. i loved his sarcasm, his way with words and his disposition in general:D seriously a very good book, its really worth reading!!

Smith's JUST KIDS is written with honesty and feeling, and I enjoyed getting a glimpse of 1970s New York through her eyes. It's hard not to admire her devotion to art, and to her friend Robert. The purity of their relationship, and the ways in which they inspired and nurtured each other's artistic growth is very affecting. The book is a beautiful portrait of this extraordinary relationship. Interestingly, although Smith comes across as likable and candid, I didn't ever feel I truly knew her. The straightforward prose can occasionally feel stark, and Patti's bold, daring choices come as a surprise, seemingly at odds with her understated voice. Not too familiar with Smith's or Mapplethorpe's work before reading this, I did feel that a lot was left off the page, although this might not be an issue to her fans or to older readers. Something holds me back from outright loving this book, but I highly recommend it.

deceptively quiet novel about middle-aged siblings take stock of their overshadowed lives after their overbearing mother dies.

Ok, I know this is supposed to be the kind of book that inspires me as a woman. I know I should want to get together with my friends (and soon to be friends) and do something good and wholesome. But I don't. I don't even want to write this review about why I don't but I want to be honest about this in a way that no one was for me. THIS BLEW!!! Don't get me wrong, there were some parts that I thought were cute and funny but that does not make a good book. I can't believe there are actually two more of these books. The story kind of had a rhythm to it and then about 3/4 of the way through, it starts zigzagging and going all over the place. The climax of the book is so over the top its easy to see that it was put there in order to find an ending and then there are little clues that were sprinkled back into the story to make it SEEM like it makes sense. One of my main problems with the book is how irresponsible Georgia is concerning her feminine health but so responsible about everything else. How? Bull!! Whatever. Look, read it if you want......but only if you're forced!

only got through a hundred pages of the book and then stopped reading it. The stories just didn't grab me, and I thought that there was no tension. I guess I am just not a zombie person.
This book is good for a couple of dozen laughs. I didn't learn anything, it didn't make me think and I can't tell you now specifically one thing in it - but MAN did I laugh a lot.
