This was a pretty amazing short story collection. F recommended it to me by saying it was kind of Gaimanesque, which it is - more Neverwhereish, that sort of dark and gritty urban fantasy, only Miéville is much darker and grittier than Gaiman. What intrigued me the most about these stories was how goddamn imaginative they are. Miéville has written things here that I have never seen before, and I've read a lot of sci fi and fantasy. I'm really glad I don't live in his head, but I look forward to reading more.

Christiane Heggan is unarguably an incredibly eloquent writer. Enemy Within was a considerably enjoyable book - with interesting characters, and a satisfying enough conclusion. It didn't quite deliver on the suspense front and the stakes didn't seem to rise much throughout the course of the story. The plot was somewhat lukewarm and often times, the dialogue sounded uncannily like the narrative. Even so, Enemy Within was an enjoyable read. The setting was absolutely enchanting and the little details about wine that were dotted throughout the entire book were charming. Recommended to anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable read.

PROS: The central core idea has a lot of potential. Good supporting players. Some of the modernizations of gods and monsters is interesting. Good climax. CONS: The lead is a lunkhead. The humor falls flat. The plotting is chaotic, dropping our characters into one random situation after another. It does veer off, but the first third is an awkward knockoff of the setup of Harry Potter. The action scenes are awkward. Even though the entire setup is built around illegitimate children, the book shortcuts itself by being unable to explore the sexual promiscuity of the gods. The fact that monsters can't be killed and a dead person that's suddenly revealed not to be dead in the end both rob the story of intensity and consequence.

“A unique formalist in the best sense of that word, Joyce combines his general sense of what really matters to humanity on the largest possible scale – the macrocosm – with a startling precision, while drawing attention to the natural world, his spirit’s favourite locations, but not just to landscapes, also to some of our smaller fellow creatures, such as moths, crows, and cats – the microcosm.” —Steven Michael Berzensky (Mick Burrs) “Sean Arthur Joyce already possesses many of the poetic gifts that take a lifetime to master. His voice shows an innocence, a childlike openness to new wonders, a deep respect for the natural world. Joyce is certainly at home in the universe and he wants to remind us that we are, too.” —Steven Michael Berzensky (Mick Burrs) Star Seeds brings together poems that celebrate, as Berzensky says, the microcosm and macrocosm – from the seed that parachutes onto the wind to the supernova whose death is the birth of a new star system. These poems remind us that separation from the world around us is an illusion, and one that humanity needs to grow out of if we are to survive the challenges of the future. But these are no mere polemics: Joyce may have a stark eye for hypocrisy but he ultimately offers the reader hope – not Pollyanna hope but the real truth of our spirit’s potential.

This was the first book that I have read of Tess Gerritsen, so I was a little lost on some of the characters. Upon reading other reviews of this book I learned that I wasn't the only one that was left out of the significance of Sansone. I mean, why did he just pop up out of nowhere and spare no expense when it came to the final arrangements? At first I had to backtrack and make sure that I wasn't getting him and Daniel mixed up, but then it ended on a cliff hanger, making me want to figure out more about this special school for Rat. Overall I enjoyed the book, I got lost in the story, and am eager to find out what happens next.

I would maybe give this a 2.5 if i could. It's written by her son and told as if she's telling the story to someone but there is just so much wrong with the flow and...ok all my english nerd friends are going to laugh here...mechanics or some other english word that i couldn't read it easily. It hopped and skipped and it was no fun. There are other books on the Gulag that are better and it didn't really contain anything i hadn't already learned. it might be a good beginner book for those who want a little bit of the Gulag history without any real meat.

Lucky, a ten year old girl, lives in Hard Pan, California, a severly poor area. Her mother has died and her father lives far away. Instead she has a French guardian who is her father's first wife. Lucky is very thoughtful about life, and wonders about the Higher Power, that all the AA people talk about in their meeting, to which Lucky eavesdrops on. Through problems that seem huge to a ten year old, Lucky learns about life. I liked the book, but I'm not sure how much a kid will like it. Some of the vocabulary (excluding scrotum!) is a bit too much for someone in elementary school. But this would be a good book to do a book discussion on
