This book moved pretty slowly. I guess I can't really hold that against Thackeray, because he said at the outset (it was actually part of the book's title) that this was "a book without a hero." None of the characters were 100% likeable or supportable, but I found myself rooting for them all the same...simply because there was no-one else to root for. Definitely one of those books that I finished simply because I'm stubborn and determined to complete what I'd started.

Great introduction book for learning the basics of option trading. Leaves a lot to be desired as far as more complex issues such as pricing options and using Greeks. But overall a well written book for beginners.

A book that discusses teen alientation and anomie. Gaines has a lot of empathy for misunderstood teens. Her investigation of a teen suicide pact is interesting. Areas of her analysis could have been stronger. Sadly, it seems like teen alientation has not changed much since her research in the 1980s. She provides some interesting evidence for the "does music cause suicide?" debate.

** spoiler alert ** Mibs is a young girl eagerly awaiting her 13th birthday because it is on that day that she will finally receive her savvy...a special "gift" bestowed upon each member of the family. Her brothers are able to summon tornadoes and electricity, her mother is perfect in everything she does. When Mibs finally receives her savvy, she's confused. What is she able to do? Hear tattoos talk to each other. Let me tell you how much this disappointed me. As the other savvies in her family seem to be extensions of themselves, tattoo-talk didn't have anything to do with Mibs' character. The idea seems very contrived once you get to the end of the book and realize that Mibs can communicate with her father (who's in a coma) through his tattoo. A little to convenient for my taste.

Superb book. Has minor sci-fi elements, which may turn off some. Personally I think it might be too complex for most of the YA crowd to really appreciate. I loved the increasingly paranoid and claustrophobic atmosphere that accompanied the protagonist's growing awareness of his situation.
