Bill Bryson can make me laugh out loud sometimes. This was the first of his books I ever stumbled upon, and is one of my favorites among his writings. Having done my fair share of hiking/camping and of the Appalachian Trail made this even better.

The main protagonist is Alex, a juvenile delinquent and gang leader, who narrates the story in a slang language. The story plunges you deep into Alex's world, an ominous time and place where crime is rampant and where he and his gang have a jolly time destroying properties and raping women. He narrates his crimes in his language, a new slang Burgess created, which takes some time understanding, and which makes the first few chapters tricky. (I was able to assimilate most of Alex's words quickly, though, so the next few chapters became quite bearable.) Despite Alex's utter lack of respect for others, he is a sympathetic character that it is easy to root for him, especially amidst all the other "good" but dysfunctional characters (such as the F. Alexander, a writer who also writes a book entitled "A Clockwork Orange" in the novel). The story, all in all, is imaginative and a bit uneasy with its study of a society warped up in their own set of morals and values. Incidentally, Stanley Kubrick directed a movie-version of the book. I prefer Anthony Burgess' words though.

** spoiler alert ** I thought this was going to be a less original novel than it was. Swords and sorcery was there, yes, classic ingredients. What put it apart, however, was the play with time and rebirth. Very interesting! If not for that, I would probably have given it a mere three stars.

I really enjoyed the Dark elf novels and so i picked these up; written before Salvatory wrote of Drizzt. These 5 books were ok, but that's it, ok. It didn't hold me like the afore mentioned series.
