I have read some strange recipes in my day - Roman condiments made from the juice of rotten fish, the front half of a capon sewed to the back half of a suckling pig (lest your dinner guests get bored), mellified man - but what follows is one of the weirdest, because, WTF England? This is for a beverage supposedly drunk in England between, say, 1100 and 1450 AD. "To make Cock Ale," instructs one ancient recipe reprinted in 1736 in Smith's Compleat Housewife , "take ten gallons of ale and a large cock, the older the better. Parboil the cock, flea him, and stamp him in a stone mortar until his bones are broken. You must craw and gut him when you flea him. Put him into two quarts of sack, and put to it 3 pounds of raisins of the sun stoned, some blades of mace, and a few cloves. "Put all these into a canvas bag, and a little while before you find the ale has done working, put the ale and bag together into a vessel. In a week or 9 days' time bottle it up, fill the bottles but just above the necks, and leave the same to ripen as other ale." What?

Sarah Addison Allen is one of those authors whose book I *have* to have as soon as it gets out. She had me at GARDEN SPELLS. She writes with a touch of whimsy and makes me want to live in the worlds she creates. The world in THE GIRL WHO CHASED THE MOON is no different. I want to be one of the townspeople in Mullaby--I wish I could see sparkles and shiny trails in the air. If you like magical realism, whimsical stories, or really, really tall people you should read this book.

It’s strange, giving that this is a paranormal novella, but the feeling of it was really more “homemade”, like a small-town story; and indeed it’s not unlikely since the set is Fairbanks, Alaska, that, even if it’s one of the biggest cities in Alaska, I don’t think it’s exactly a metropolis. Danny was born and bred in Fairbanks and he left only for a short period during college; while away he “experimented” his gay nature, and he is not repentant, only maybe a little scared by the possible rejection from his family and friends now that he is back home. Moreover, his family is having financial issues and he doesn’t want to bother them with his own trouble. Brandon and Justin are Danny’s high school-mates; while Danny was in the closet during high school, they were a couple, and probably Danny envied them. Now Danny is planning to start an aerial hunting business, but more to help his brother who is jobless, and Brandon and Justin cannot allow it: they are shapeshifters, and Justin has already lost his father to a hunter. They decide to blackmail Danny, they know he is gay, more thanks to their gayradar than consistent proofs, and so they need something more: kidnapping Danny and having wild sex with him, while gathering all the needed proofs, that is the plan. Now, first of all, it seems to me that more than a sacrifice for an higher scope, Brandon and above all Justin are realizing one of their high-school fantasies; second, Danny is not really an unwilling captive, on the contrary he is more than willing to provide all the “proofs” they need. Actually Danny was like a castaway in a desert island without food and drink, and Brandon and Justin are like a banquette. The higher purpose of Brandon and Justin is soon forgotten, and all three men are enjoying what could be easily turn into a perfect threesome; Brandon and Justin adopt the pack philosophy, sharing is better, and while they would have no problem to share Danny between them, maybe Danny has other plan. As in other similar stories, I think that in the end, the original couple will remain the same and that the temporary addition will find his own path, maybe remaining in good relationship, but he is not a permanent thing. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004KAA8QM/?...

This is probably my all time favorite book. Every couple of years I read it again and I love it just as much each time.

Gateway winner 2009-2010. Definitely for high school/8th grade readers. A good story, but I found it a bit flat. I didn't find Hannah's character as believable as it could have been, and I felt like the smaller pieces linking the tape sessions together were a little forced and weak. I am sure this book is ground-breaking because there isn't a lot like it out there, but I just am not convinced as to the authenticity of the character's voices or the story itself. The plot isn't very realistic, but maybe that's not a flaw...maybe it's not supposed to be. If the book's purpose is to stir up emotion and cause kids to sit up and take notice of others, then it's successful. But the content itself has little to do with actual suicides and is a far cry from real life and the actual behaviors of truly depressed people. The whole idea of this girl documenting things doesn't really ring true...I think that anyone committing suicide is far past putting forth effort to plan such an elaborate departure. What is realistic is the notion that people go through life without really taking the feelings of others into consideration. The book probably appeals to the high school set because it's a sad one, as sad books typically garner a lot of attention. It's OK, but it's not as authentic as I'd like it to be.

Not quite as good as Money in that while it's more ambitious, it's less perfectly executed. You need a high tolerance for flawed and dislikable characters to read Martin Amis, but he's a great stylist and fairly astute about human failings.

Şüpheliydim, ama bu çok sürükleyici, yedek ve kasvetli. Hızlı okuma, yanınızda kalır.
