This book is quite clever and fun to read -- I would have given it 4-stars if it were not for this passage in the middle of the book that I thought should have been cut down quite a bit.

The headmaster of the school of typing monkeys has written something from the heart at last. I refused to read any more Eggers after YSKOV, but this is not (except for still some over-clever stylistics) like other works by Eggers. It is heartfelt, with a conscience, an actually human work.

You think you're reading a classic, but really you're reading one of the best trash novels EVER!!! A cute guy I volunteered with when I was 15 recommended it to me so of course I wanted to read it. By the time I was a few pages in, I forgot the guy and was caught up in the world of Cathy and co. The movie doesn't even compare, I don't care how hot James Dean is!

This brought tears to my eyes. Even more radical was the little girl who was from an atheistic family. Great read. Kids' version is coming out in November 2011. And yes! I cried!

I read it with the joy and laughter but also with the sympathy that comes with painful recognition that lies too close for comfort. All the foibles and delights of Oxford life are presented here, and it was great fun re-living them through this book. Ulimately though the book was cause for rather painful reflection: had I really made the most of my time in Oxford, was I truly accepted? Was my three years just a catalogue of wasted opportunities? My verdict: a welcome addition to the vast corpus of literature on Oxford, from a much different perspective. I picked this up quite randomly at a tiny bookshop at Tanglin Mall on my lunch break. Upon seeing the rather brilliantly hilarious title and reading blurb, I immediately bought it. It definitely made my day.

I hate Stephen King for making me stay up until 2 am finishing this book. I love him for writing a book so engrossing it forces me to keep reading until the end. The length is rather daunting, and there might possibly be some parts that could have been trimmed, but I couldn't tell you what any of them were. The action unfolds slowly, but in such a way that keeps the reader turning pages. The suspense creeps in until you can't remember when this nice little book about a novelist who faces writers' block after the death of his wife turned into a scary-ass ghost story. Another interesting thing is that by the end, those you sympathized with toward the beginning reveal themselves to be just as evil as those who are "bad guys" all along. I can't really say much more without ruining the exciting revelations of this compelling novel.
