Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Catching an Evil Tail is Mary Abshire's thrilling follow up to Claiming the Evil Dead. Jessie Garrett is a half-demon with a unique ability. She's able to dispose of evil souls by ingesting them. Though she has tried to hide her gift for most of her life, Jessie was recently "outed," and now the supernatural community is after her help. While her vampire boyfriend Drake is in Europe on business, Jessie agrees to help a friend of a friend. Well, her friend is actually Jeremy, a demon she owes a debt to, and his friend happens to be a werewolf named Ryan. Alan, the Alpha of Ryan's pack has been challenged for control by an evil werewolf who has spent years terrorizing and murdering women. Alan wants Jessie present at the challenge so she can send his soul to hell. To complicate matters, Jeremy wants Jessie for more than just her soul catching abilities, and Drake is none to thrilled about her being with him while he is away. I dare you to read the first chapter and not be sucked into this story! (This was also true of the previous book.) Mary Abshire knows how to grab the reader's attention and not let go. The plot moves fast with a few surprising twists along the way. While I'm not sure this story follows the rules of a romance exactly, there are plenty of sexy scenes and erotic tension for those who like it steamy. The cast of characters is strong, and it includes the major players in the paranormal realm: demons, werewolves, vampires, warlocks and witches. If you like strong female leads, then you will love Jessie. She is tough and knows how to take care of herself, but also realizes when she needs help. She continues to be troubled by her demon-half, wondering if she herself is doomed for hell, or whether her good deeds will save her soul. In this story, Jessie's relationship with Drake is rocky when she feels he has betrayed her trust. At the same time she's tempted by not one, but two other men who have set their sights on her: Jeremy and Alan. Jessie is conflicted, and the situation is an emotional one, not only for her but for the men vying for her attention. Catching an Evil Tail is a captivating story that would appeal to fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I'm very curious to see what happens to Jessie in the next book, Fighting Evil. Drake or Jeremy...who will she choose?

I would have enjoyed this book much more if all of the characters did not have the same name. It was really confusing.

Joanna Landry researches near death experiences. Some of the near death experiences related by patients are dismissed by Landry as too hokey to be realistic, but some of them are hauntingly strange. She agrees to become a test subject and finds herself living the events of the Titanic's tragic destruction. Landry puzzles through this mystery and her own skepticism as the novel progresses.

This is the type of poetry book that makes people hate poetry. I wanted to poke my eyes out by the end.

Your basic chick lit about a mom and her friends, her problems with other moms, her problems with her own mom, her husband's layoff and consideration of whether she should go back to work. While the story was pretty straightforward chick lit, there was something about this book and the main character's observations that was a touch more witty than the usual mom-fiction. The phrase easy to read doesn't really do this book justice. You almost could read it in your sleep. Loved loved loved the multiple 80-TV references.

Another winner for Vicki Tyley, a suspense filled story with a few surprises to keep a reader on their toes. I really like the fact the book flowed without any bumps. I could easily picture the characters and settings in my head. I have to say, the only thing missing in this book is the main characters not connecting more. I was hungry for the connection that Vicki Tyley is so great of creating. Maybe a sequel that continued with some of same characters?

It's true: Christians think too much or too little. Dr. John Piper gives serious thought to clear thinking about the most important thing in the universe, namely the Creator of the universe. It is a compelling if occasionally dry work that touches on a much neglected issue. The church is often accused of anti-intellectualism while also "scholarizing" the Bible into liberal principles. Both are inherent dangers that Piper pleas against. He defines thinking, dismantles relativism, and concludes on the endpoint of thinking. There are familiar Piper-isms about the glory of God that are reframed anew in the context of contemplation. Piper achieves his goal of focusing your brain the right direction. Yet he does become very scholarly to the point of dryness, especially in his dragging section of relativism (which does not always play fair). Parts of the book are unsuccessful simply because they somewhat betray his earnest passion by over-thinking. If our thoughts about God are to become fully alive through invigorated affections, Piper could have demonstrated this by cutting an already short work for an easier facilitation of his plea. However, it could have been a lack of patience on my part and ultimately doesn't detract from Piper's thesis. For those who wonder how knowledge and wisdom can properly connect to the heart, this is an excellent distillation of that process for all believers. Piper is certainly a passionate pastor but is also deliberate in his speech and mind. He makes the case, both in his writing and ministry, that both are possible.
