Originally on From Book to Hooked. As far as werewolf stories go, this one isn't at all bad. It's not entirely unique, but unique is hard to come by when there are so many werewolf stories out there. The thing that is unique when it comes to the werewolves in this story, however, is that their changes happen based on temperature. In other words, cold = wolf and warm = human. There's something about the way Maggie Stiefvater writes that gets to you. Shiver is just one example of her beautiful lyrical prose. You can connect with both Sam and Grace, as the story is written from their alternating perspectives, and I could literally feel their sadness as the story progressed. Still, as it is with most, if not all stories, I don't think everyone will enjoy Shiver. While Shiver does have other elements, when you really get down to it, it's a love story. The main plot is Sam and Grace fighting a transformation neither of them can control that could rip them apart. Stiefvater reinvented a horror story of half-human creatures and created something sad and beautiful. I think that's why I fell in love with this story: I'm a sucker for emotional stories. On to the characters! The best way for me to describe Grace is strong. While I didn't completely love her as a character, I feel like she holds herself together even when she wants nothing more than to break. With a case of the classic disappearing parent syndrome, Grace tries to pretend everything is ok; that it doesn't bother her to try so hard and be completely ignored. Grace also holds Sam together, in a way. When he's ready to give up, she keeps trying. Sam is also quite the character. I would describe him as... honorable? Emo seems good, too, but let's go with honorable. Or sweet. Sweet works, too. He's just... read the book. So, overall, I would recommend this book to people who happen to be suckers for love stories. I can't wait to see how Sam and Grace's story continues. *sigh* Do I even need to say "I'm hooked?"

Very good book. A page turner and a quick read. It gets slightly dark for a couple of chapters in the middle while the main character reaches the climax of her depression.

Thrilling and quite comprehensive, the trilogy is brought to an end - I'm a little wistful this ends the adventures of Lisbeth and Mikael.

This is one of the first books I remember finishing outside of school required text. Pretty creepy. All I recall is the guy getting "called" to the satanic books in the library while on LSD. Later on he killed a kid and kept telling him to say he loved satan. Murder on the north shore of long island.

OK Dave...now we're on target! This one was awesome! It totally blew the other two I read out of the water. If you only have the time or desire to read one book by Dave Eggers, make it this one

it's not the best reading material in the world as it stands, but it can help you survive through any session in any studio if you need the help. unlike "the mastering engineer's handbook", this is a true handbook.

Well, Ondaatje is becoming one of my very most favourite authors! I love his writing style (like reading poetry!! And probably not for everyone!) I had seen the movie a number of years ago -- and began wondering if this really was the same book!! First of all, this book focuses on different characters and a differentromance than those focused on in the movie. Second, you really get to know the characters in much more depth in this book than you do in the movie. (although you get to know the Indian sapper and English nurse much more than you would ever imagine if you have seen the movie.) The English patient in this book is not a very central figure -- but rather the catalyst for the discussions, the feelings and the actions which happen. Once again, Ondaaatje beautifully portrays the loneliness, longings and needs, particularly for connection, of his characters.

I couldn't do it. I guess I find the British aristocracy and their hollow friends rather tiresome. Stopped 1/4 of the way through.
