Great story. This was an enjoyable quick read. It has all types of classic fantasy elements, swords, magic, monsters and dragons. It also has a fair amount of action and violence. This was the first Elric book that I've ever read, and I'll definitely be reading more. The good (and bad) part of this book is its simplicity. The story moves extremely quickly, jumping from one significant plot point to the next. It is refreshing in a way because you see the action unfold rapidly. At the same time it can be disappointing because I often found myself wishing for more description and development of the characters and surroundings. Moorcock simply lays the story out in an almost matter-of-fact way without really drawing the reader into the world. I found myself feeling like I was reading a summary of a much larger and richer epic. Overall I would recommend this to any sword and sorcery fan. It was certainly enjoyable, but It could have been written better by adding a little more background, descriptive text and tying events together with additional story. Still, by making it short, it was a perfect book for my train commute.

This is a clear and compelling account of the first chunk of Hegel's Science of Logic. Hegel's book is widely misunderstood, partially because it is so hard to read. Houlgate brilliantly explains Hegel's text in a way that corrects many, many misunderstandings, and he demonstrates the power and profundity of Hegel's thought. He also discusses fairly carefully the technicalities of Hegel's argument and language, (and the book includes a text and translation of the first chapters of Hegel's Science of Logic). This is mandatory reading for any student of Hegel, and would be a excellent selection for anyone with an interest in Hegel's thought.

Adrienne Su is one of those poets in contemporary Asian America I think is sadly underrated and underappreciated. I regard her Middle Kingdom as my favorite of her books, because I can see a lot of where she's come from and will go in future collections. Middle Kingdom taught me a great deal of how I would write my poetry around the early 2000s. Some techniques I would use, others I would not. But some of her pieces I particular enjoy are "Savannah Crabs," "Miss Chang is Missing," and "PIRANEX" which in was a key influence on my poem 'A Hmong Goodbye'. Middle Kingdom influenced how I structured my first book, On the Other Side of the Eye. Su's Middle Kingdom has poems that are very easy to get into but in most cases have a significant and rewarding number of layers and levels that should earn her a much stronger position in Asian American arts and letters. But I always look forward to her next collections ever since this book.

This is a story about a man and his family who live near the beach. Every day he goes to sculpt things in the sand. One day he sees some white horses running on the beach and decides to sculpt a great horse. He does so and leaves it there over night. In the night, the “sand horse” longs to be running with the white horses on the beach and eventually does. The old man comes back in the morning and notices that the horse is gone. He is happy because he knows his horse is running now with the other white horses. I read this story to my class and students love it. They also enjoyed pictures and the plot. I could ask them questions about the “sand horse”, which opened their imagination. We had fun!

** spoiler alert ** My warning: I really like, usually love Gaelen Foley. And I'm about to rant really badly. You've been forewarned! Major spoilers here so beware. OK, I really liked the premise of this book. Lovers reunited is always a great one. I haven't read any of the other Inferno series, but that didn't seem to be a problem. The hero? Dreamy, charming, handsome, loyal, and a warrior. Can't get better than that! The heroine? Well, let me say some good things before I rant. The story is good if not a little predictable. There is some major contriving going on, but the story was enjoyable so I was able to overlook it. I was somewhat confused at the good "friend" Delilah because she never really seemed to care about Mara, just about Mara making her feel better. I was tremendously glad when Jordan called her out at the end of the book. I do wish she had apologized for her selfishness to Mara, but whatever. The ending is a little too much for me. I noticed I kept rolling my eyes alot at the end so thank you, Ms. Foley, for a headache and a bad ending! OK, the rant: the heroine, Mara, is seriously TSTL. At first she was portrayed as the poor child who survived a horrible childhood only to fall victim to a horrible marriage. But she has supposedly learned how to be independent and mature through these hardships so we should look at her as a fully developed woman who is weary of the ugly people in the world. Yeah, right. Mara is at turns a doting mother, a devoted friend, and a selfish brat with a serious jealousy problem. And she can't even blame her jealousy on her previous marriage because her husband was so horrible she didn't mind that he went to other women all the time. I'm going to talk about two scenes so that hopefully I keep this from spiraling into how much I hated the heroine. Scene 1: Jordan follows his target at a ball. Mara sees him walking and, angry that he didn't come directly to her, follows him. A little immature, but fine. Then when she comes upon the library that he went into, she starts banging on the door yelling for him to come out. Not just knocking like "hello, are you here?" But banging incessantly for him to open up and who is he with. And he has been nothing but doting since they renewed their relationship (in which she calls all the shots there, too). When he does open the door, after his target runs away of course, she demands to know who he was with and what he was doing. This is a woman of the world? If he had a reputation as a scoundrel, fine, but he didn't. In fact, he had just returned to London a few weeks ago, and had been spending every day with her!! And she follows him all in a pique because when she spotted him at the ball, he didn't run to her? UGH!! Scene 2: Her "friend" convinces her that after Jordan's very heartfelt plea for just a little time, he must be up to no good. Again, she has no reason to mistrust him at this point, but she agrees and off they go to the bordello. Instead of waiting at home to question him, she runs off to confront him there then gets all hurt when he is angry that shes there. Of course, he is again trying to corner his target when she walks in all flirty and happy that he isn't shagging someone. Off the target goes so he whirls on her in fury wondering why she is at a bordello. She then gets all hurt, I guess because she expected him to laugh at her sauciness?? She tells him not to see her ever again and flounces away. Cut to the next morning where he gives her one of the most honest, impassioned speeches about his life as a spy, confesses his love, and asks for her forgiveness. She realizes that there were a few times when he had to lie, because he's a SPY!, and she's all "it's all been a lie. How could you use me like that?" SERIOUSLY! He's just told her all of his secrets including the fact that he isn't allowed to tell her, but he is willing to go against his oath TO THE KING for her, and she's all "You liar!"???? UGH! That doesn't even begin to mention the ending where she just becomes irredeemable to me with her trying to help the trained warrior by doing exactly what he told her not do, but whatever. At this point, I'm wondering if having her character be twenty and newly out in society wouldn't have been better since it would have given the reader some patience with her stupidity. I'm very sad that I disliked this character so much because I truly do enjoy Ms. Foley's writing. I guess this one just wasn't for me. For a neutral reader, the story was okay, the subplot with Drake was great, the writing easy if somewhat contrived scenes, and the hero was lovable. If you don't mind TSTL women, then this one won't be that bad for you. For myself, I am still going to buy the next one - probably with the credit I'll get at HPB for this one!

i wish sirk remembered more about "all that heaven allows," but otherwise this book was an invaluable resource. i love the directors on directors series.
Laurel Hawthorne was awakened in the night by the ghost of a 13-year old girl. She later discovers her daughter's best friend Molly face down in her swimming pool. She wants her sister, Thalia, to come for a visit and help her get to the bottom of what happened. The author bounced from issue to issue without ever really resolving what happened to the girl who stopped swimming. If Thalia is supposed to be so intuitive, shy doesn't she have all the answers--and why a Ouija board? Too scattered for me.
