Although considered daunting and interminable by some, this is by far one of the best novels of all time (if you can sit down long enough to keep track of the story line and characters...) A testament to the genuis that is Tolstoy.

Bookgroup August/September 2013. Very fun mystery set in a small English town in the 1950's. Protagonist is a bright 11 year old girl with two older sisters. Hope to read more in this set.

I don't understand all the negative comments surrounding this book. For heaven's sake the author wasn't trying to write an "important treatise on racism." Stockett was simply telling a story, hence the word: novel. This a story about a handful of women trying to navigate the chasm and inequality between the races, women on both sides--whose lives are unavoidably woven together--loving and learning, and overcoming their fears and prejudices in a period of change, a period rife with unfairness and sometimes hatred. I thought it was well-written, brilliantly revealing the challenging period of time and place in which the story was set (Mississippi in the early 60's) through the eyes and voices of three different women. The characterization was nothing less than superb. A really great book!

It's really worth it to track down the unabridged version... we read both.

This one will rip your heart right out. Course her books usually do. Her characters are every day people, the type one can really identify with. She builds a great story with people you begin to love, then at the end she jerks the rug right out from under you, and you never see it coming. I sure hope she keeps her books coming. One of my favorite authors.

This truly is an amazing work of fiction. I love the characters and the pace--two important elements for a mammoth book...for me, anyway. I also like its not-too-veiled religious symbolism and other double meanings. My favorite storyline is Larry Underwood's attempt to prove he isn't a selfish person, but I am also fascinated by every scene with Randall Flagg and his cronies in Vegas. Harold Lauder is also a favorite--I liked the bad guys, I guess...or the ones--like Larry--who perceive themselves as bad guys who want to change their ways. I finished this book while on break at work. One of my co-workers noticed I was reading it and asked what it is about. I thought about it for a second--and after trying to explain it to my wife to no avail the night before--I simply said it was about the permeation and seduction of perpetual evil. Those who know how the book ends hopefully catch my drift... MILD SPOILER... I really appreciate the risks King takes--my jaw dropped about five or...a hundred times during the last two hundred pages of the book. I know some don't like how many main characters are iced, but I think it takes a lot of courage to wipe out characters we've been reading about for 1000+ pages. I think a happily-ever-after ending would disappoint readers more.

I enjoyed this book but perhaps I missed something. I can't see why everyone thinks the book is fantastic. Perhaps it is overkill on the made for TV movies. Yes, the historical bits I enjoyed. There is some good wit as well. It is a Chick book as don't we all want a Mr. Darcy?? If I have missed the boat I would love to hear why.

This was a much better attempt a writing this series for Brandon Sanderson. While his tempo is not quite what Jordan's was, he comes across with character development that was needed to develop the series to it's closing. I still do have some reservations about how characters react/act in some situations, but I also feel I have a better understanding of that from previously having read Sanderson's other stories. For the first part of the book it was slow and clunky for me to adjust fully to the Sanderson writing. It is good to see that in this book he is quickly becoming more comfortable with the characters. I find myself after having finished it fully looking forward to the completion of this series that I have been reading for the past 16 years.
