I kind of hated this book. When I read it, I could just feel how sad Bella was, and it made me feel terrible. The ending was good, but that's just about the only good part of this book. The rest of it, I only read because I needed the rest of the information.

This is an incredible book. I think it suffers a little from translation--passages and phrases sometimes feel both lovely and awkward at the same time. But the primary purpose of the book, to give a sense of the extent, political/social context and the great loss that's accompanied book destruction since the beginning of writing is tremendous. The major flaw is that there is no mention of sub-Saharan Africa, which seems a major omission. Still, this is a book I'm planning on buying, since I went back to read certain pieces many times.

This book was really not what I was expecting. For one thing, I didn't expect the main character to be in a coma for the majority of the book. And I didn't expect the writing to be so lovely and heart-wrenching. And I really didn't expect such a short book to have such an impact. Seventeen-year-old Mia's story is told in a masterfully woven series of flashbacks on her life intertwined with the viewing of events outside of herself after a horrible accident puts her in a life-threatening coma. She's not quite a ghost or a spirit, but she knows she's not in her body, and no one else can see her. I appreciated that her state of existence was never fully explained as Mia herself doesn't really understand it. But she does come to realize that she must make a choice: whether she will stay and live, or go. The story was very moving, without being melodramatic. The characters were real and complex, so that when they were hurting, you felt it. Yeah, I cried, okay? Because you know that no matter what Mia decides in the end, there will be hurt and sadness. And that's what made it real for me. Sometimes a decision doesn't come down to a good choice and a bad choice. Sometimes, the consequences are hard either way. But, you still have to decide.
