No attempt at style. No attempt at pace. No sense of atmosphere. No narrative or characterization, to speak of. From time to time the narrator adopts a shrillily hectoring tone which is particularly off putting rather than trusting the reader to form their own interpretations. Clearly has a lot to learn.

Again...one of those books that planted the seeds of magic in my soul that wouldn't grow for years, I read this book when it was first published in grade school and loved it and read it over and over and yearned for the next 3 books of the quartet to be written, but the library never got them and i eventually forgot the series, until my friend jen checked them out from her school library about a year or two ago. I devoured all four of them in about a day and they were well worth the wait. Such a beautiful world created, wonderful characters and a nice take on Magick.

Fabulous book that I was "forced" to read for book club. Afterward we watched the movie together and we were surprisingly torn on whether we preferred the book to the movie. Very thought-provoking, and also readable.

The Cultural History of Finland 1: Heaven and Earth Comparative Religion This really caught me off guard. I've been so used to nearly falling asleep with Finnish history, that a book which actually makes it quite interesting deserves my utmost respect. The prehistory part is still dry, but this time reading about it didn't feel like a chore. Granted, there is some repetition that could have been avoided with better editing, and the writing isn't as great as you would hope for from an ambitious project like this. It is, however, a great read for all Finns who want to know where this country stems from. The writers have also done a good job in focusing on the most essential topics. I had to read only about a half of this gigantic volume, but I think I'd be very inclined to finish this and read the other ones once I have the stomach to read a bit heavier non-fiction in my spare time again.

An early Coupland (his second novel), I probably didn't pick the best time to read this as a lot of it deals with money worries. In fact, there's a whole 'Down and Out in L.A.' section and—yeah. Bit close to home, that. I don't know if it's the result of my trying to subconsciously distance myself, but this book didn't reach me as much as some of his others; there were sequences I loved, like the bits about 20-year-old protagonist Tyler's trip to Paris, and his visit to Père Lachaise Cemetery (burial place of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison, among others, and a place I visited when I was 17), but I couldn't get into it as much as some of Coupland's other books, even the insane ones. However, as is often the case with Coupland's novels, the closing scene is—almost atypically in relation to the rest of the book—beautiful, serene, and moving.

This book has taken me a long time to get through. It's an interesting story, but it seems to be lagging a bit for me. I think I have 50 pages left. I'll finish it soon. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for this book. I do get a little frustrated with the narrator and how she rambles on about what people are doing. It's just that she really likes to describe events and non-events. OK, I'll finish it. After I finished this book I decided I wasn't that impressed. The writing itself is fine, but I just felt like I wanted more from this story. Mainly it annoyed me that the narrator rambled so much and described things that didn't (at least i didn't feel) need to be described.
