Couldn't get into this book. I am sure Ms. Sundance had some good ideas. I skimmed through parts of it. Her approach that better training is needed for most dogs and the Human-dog bond is strong and you can change your dog's behavior by working with them through the bonds you have with them. Wonder if I couldn't get into the book because right now I have 12 foster dogs plus 10 of my own at my house? Don't have much time to concentrate on things these days.

I am a huge Scott Westerfeld fan but I found this book lacking. As usual, his writing and development was great, but I didn't feel like I was engaged in a whole story or new world. All I can seem to remember is Peep cats, rats, and don't have sex unless you want to be a vampire.

This book left me freaked out for weeks. It's told from the perspective of someone in a coma, drifting in and out of three levels of awareness: nearly aware of his real surroundings; remembering the events of his life that led him to be in this coma; and in a surreal fantasy African safari. Very well written, easy to follow despite the narrative tricks, and with a narrator that will draw you in somewhat against your will.

I have such a soft spot for illustrations of dogs with huge, adorable eyes, and this book is chock full of them. My favorite illustration is on the page that reads, "Dog wired/ Dog tired." Adorable.

I think I enjoyed this book. Hard to tell. It is very dark, with some incredibly disturbing scenes. But there are also many moments of hope and its chock-full of interesting allusions to all that is wonderful and evil about human nature and society.

I only gave it one star for the references to Children's Librarianship that I live every day. This book went NOWHERE...which is funny because the entire story is made up of the characters going everywhere (geographically speaking) I will say that I liked the author's point of view on the religious right who cherry pick the Bible to suit their own ignorance and prejudices. My favorite line was about those who ignore the parts that say “you can’t ever eat pork or shellfish, and women should cover their heads, and you can’t plant two crops in the same field," yet will live and die by the next line that says two men can't love each other. I had high hopes for this, but I hated the main character, the young boy who was supposedly homosexual and running from a wacko religious cult bent on making him straight, was just annoying. The Russian mobster family was shallow and boring. The more I write this review, the more I realize how much I seriously disliked this book. So there.

Thought the book gave some good detail about life in Afghanistan, both before and after the wars. It's unbelievable what life is like for some people. Makes me feel lucky to be an American. I tried to read this when it first came out but could not get into it. Maybe I wasn't ready.
