Abby's come back for yet another summer at camp and looking forward to spending time with her friend Rose...who unfortunately is now a cabin assistant so doesn't have much time for Abby. So...Abby looks for new friends within her cabin and discovers her new bunkmate Shasta. Shasta is everything Abby isn't. Pretty, intelligent, talkative, and...oh yeah she was late to camp because she was struck by lightning! Abby, Shasta, and the other cabin girls experience boys, camp food, camp fights, and more during their time at camp. I'll be the first to admit I'm not really the intended audience for this book. That being said I have a younger sister who experienced many of the types of trials and tribulations that Abby does in this book, with having to meet new friends, dealing with crushes, and even worse...dealing with the fallout of friends fighting. And...for the most part Hope does an excellent job of creating and developing the girls and the space they inhabit as real people. The type of people you could run across in your normal everyday life. But...I feel like Hope tries to cram too much of a story into a short amount of space. There are just so many things left unanswered and undeveloped characters that I felt like I wanted and needed more. I'd still recommend the book to 10-14 year olds, but I'd be more likely to hand over one of Hope's other books for reading as well.

This is the first in a series of 5 books. Another vampyre storyline. I really enjoyed this different twist to usual vampyre stories. Can't wait to finish the series

I think Georgette Heyer wrote the original "Chick-lit". Unfortunately, in the US her books are found in the Romance section with ugly covers, so ones initial reaction would be "Oh a romance, how embarassing"...But in the UK her books are pretty and light just like her stories and right there with the rest of lit books. SO that must mean something right? Just gather up some courage and go to B&N and pick one up or use the internet as a cover and order! Heyer will keep you entertained and yes, the main characters are usually a Young Lady and Suitor/Rouge, BUT she has a great sense of humor and doesn't take her characters too seriously. Austen lovers will be satisfied. I usually like reading one after a dark/heavy/depressing book so it keeps me from becoming too emo. On to Black Sheep... This was my first and so far I like it the best. A Beautiful Wealthy Spinster and Much Older Man...drama is sure to ensue! how fun!

A little weak.

I read this for Anthropology, although I would have read it just for kicks. I really enjoy Harris's materialist view of culture and the seemingly strange taboos that societies have.

Nothing terribly groundbreaking (in terms of sci-fi or religious satire), but worked well as a vacation book.

What would you do if you were given a penguin? Mr. Popper lets it live in the icebox and creates an ice rink for it in the basement, of course. What will Mrs. Popper think? His children? The townsfolk of Stillwater? How will the penguins (he ends up with 12) adapt? I've heard the movie is not good, so stick with the book.

Bella Swan's relationship with vampire Edward continues in the next book in the Twilight series, New Moon. Although Edward has always seemed entirely devoted to Bella, she begins to notice that he's acting more and more aloof. Her worst fears are confirmed when Edward tells her he is leaving her to go to L.A. with his family, and that she should go on with her life without him. Bella is devastated. Four "months" of blank pages go by before she can bear to start living again. And even then, she latches on to her friend Jacob in an attempt to fill the hole in her heart. Realizing that she hears Edward's voice warning her when she is doing something dangerous or stupid, she begins living her life on the edge: cliff diving, riding a motorcycle, and trying to find the meadow Edward took her to when he was still in Forks. But when Bella's friend Jacob starts acting strangely, becoming detached himself, she is determined to find out exactly what is going on. Why has Jacob pushed her away? Who (or what) is killing hikers in the woods nearby? And why does Edward's sister appear on her doorstep all of a sudden? Although this book wasn't as good as Twilight, I still found myself captivated, unwilling to put it down. I can't wait for Eclipse, set to come out this fall!

I'm reading this Paraguayan historical novel a second time and enjoying (and understanding) it much more, though it's still incredibly dense and mind-boggling. Helen Lane, the translator, should have won some sort of award for faithfully capturing the spirit of the Perpetual Dictator's rambling, insulting, witty, and pretentious wordplay and neologisms.
Perfectly pleasant, Sarah Dessen is the YA Nicholas Sparks. Her books never disappoint in the least, but also don't reverberate inside your head for days trying to reconcile themselves.
