I really enjoyed the quirky characters in this book. I didn't "like" some of them, but I found them all interesting.

I picked this book for the cover! When I saw it sitting on the 'recommended reads' shelf at my public library a few years ago, it was like love at first sight. Then a peek inside and it was marriage! I eventually bought 4 copies. The story itself is wickedly imaginitave, I definitely got a Vonnegut feel from her writing. The characters are eccentric, surreal, yet completely relatable. The storylines are pretzel like in their intertwining, and equally delicious. The combination of the fantastic tale with the awesome Loteria inspired images (yes, this book even has pictures!) was almost too much fabulousness to handle. I love this book, and am waiting with baited breath for her next novel to be released...

Easy read. The characters are compelling, if not deep.

It picks up where Jane Austen's original Pride and Prejudice takes off. Be prepared to take a little time to get "into" the language of the period but this is good "bodice ripper" romance at it's best.

I had Prof Woodard for a Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology course at my University and I can't believe how incredibly intelligent this guy is. It was a Classics/Linguistics course taught from a historical standpoint and I believe it's the only one he taught. Of course, his version of Ovid's Fasti was the course text, and I'm damn glad for it.

Who would think that 1830's English politics could be so riveting? Seriously, it may start off slow, but this is one of my favorites of Eliot's (after Middlemarch, of course).

It is scary how a book written in the 1930s could describe exactly our society today. We are not really far from it, if you disregard the all-babies-from-bottles aspect. I think we are still newcomers to this kind of reproduction approach. But the values that this "Brave New world" hypnoses are just the very values that our society tries to implements upon its people. See how our children go to school to learn to be a productive citizens? One's value is placed upon one's capacity to buy things - the industrial society. And the savages live isolated on reservation? It's not so much about the Indiana but it's the people of the "undeveloped" countries. I can see the parallel comparison lines here. On the other hand, I just hate hate the characters in this book. I don't expect them to be heroic or such but they way they behave is unnerving. Those characters just remind me of my hating feelings toward the main character when reading the Kite Runner.

preferred her other book by a lot actually.
This is more of a remembrance than a review. I read this book twice--and the first time, believe it or not, I didn't catch the King Lear story, probably because I read King Lear while driving tractor one summer in high school. I probably would have never read it again, except that I went to a performance of King Lear last summer (2008) at Shakespeare on the Green in Omaha, NE. Suddenly I remembered A Thousand Acres and decided to read it again with King Lear in mind. It changed the whole story for me.
