Didn't have high hopes when I found this random book at the beach house I was visiting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the protagonists, and found it to be an all right story. Although, the title of the book is dumb.

Just finished this. If you are in the mood for an 18th century tale of voluptuous perfidy, this is amazing. It's got all the gothic props in spades: sexual transgressions, labyrinthine catacombs, nuns, ghosts, the wandering jew... even satan makes an appearnace.

This was one of those "beautifully written" [short] novels that didn't thrill me, even though it DID win the Pulitzer Prize. I'm tired of reading about old men on their deathbeds. My friend Karen thought I'd relate because there was a missing father, whom the protagonist looked for. Still... not so much. I had 40 pages left to read when I arrived at book club on February 18; I haven't bothered to finish it, even though I was off this week.

I love Joshilyn Jackson's book. She is one of those quiet authors whose books are packed with strong women. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the story turns in a different direction that allows the characters to be redeemed.

The Host has a very, very, very slow start. It doesn't get good until chapter 15, but once the action gets going the story is addicting. I don't usually enjoy sci-fi, so this was enjoyable enough that it didn't have a lot of "make believe" terms. Meyer's is a great storyteller.
