I think I missed something. As with Autograph Man, I just couldn't like the characters I felt I was supposed to like. I felt as though Kiki was dynamic and well-developed, but the other characters seemed like one dimensional self-absorbed twits.

I really don't know know quite yet what to think about this book. The language is beautiful and the story is thought provoking but I am not sure if a teen will pick it up or if they do, will they finish it to it's lovely but sort of heartbreaking conclusion. Teens (and adults) for whom language is the doorway will love it but others, hmmm, maybe not so much. At the very least it has given me a new favorite quote: "Yet how, she wondered, does one craft sturdy happiness out of something as important, as complicated, as unrepeatable and as easily damaged as a life?"

Fascinating, disgusting, and hilariously written from the first sentence. I couldn't stop reading bits of it aloud to my friends regardless of whether or not they were interested (or had just eaten). One of the things that most amazed me reading this was the realization of how little I know about all the insane shit that people spend their days doing. Like, holy crap, it's actually someone's job to walk around a field filled with dead bodies and take notes on the rate of decomposition. Someone actually receives a paycheck for sawing off the heads of human cadavers for lab use. Plus the chapter on decomposition is really eye-opening. Really makes you reconsider burial. The sad fact is, a zombie invasion just won't be possible when I turn into an oozing flesh puddle. So now I'm not sure what to do with my organs...

I started this book and got into it right away, even though I could never read "Shipping News" which so many have raved about. But I really got into this story, I think because of the accordian angle and the topic of immigration. I'm taking a break now and hope to finish reading this summer.

Great play, but the edition I have isn't that good.

Long-listed for the 2011 Story Prize "In this stripped-raw debut collection, Ethel Rohan’s thirty stories swell with broken, incomplete people yearning to be whole. Through tight language and searing scenarios, Rohan brings to life a plethora of characters — exposed, vulnerable souls who are achingly human." http://darkskymagazine.com/books/cut-...

My blog post about this book is at this link.
Another fun adventure in Gail Carriger's alternate reality Victorian England steampunk/paranormal/mystery/suspense/pseudo-romance (I have no idea why it's being called a romance - it's definitely not a Harlequin of any kind - which is a very good thing) wherein parasol-wielding Lady Alexia Tarabotti-Maccon flees England for Italy, fights off vampires intent on killing her, finds herself imprisoned by and subsequently escaping from Italian Templars who wish to use her as a supernatural weapon and a German scientist who wishes to dissect and study her, and finally confronts her husband who was the cause of the entire misadventure to begin with.

Again a very sweet story and so niche pictures much more to look than to read.
