LOVE IT!!!!! One of the best books out there for readers of all ages. I grew up watching the movies, and I was pleasantly surprised how in-line it was with the book. It reminds you of the dreamer that is within us all.

Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot changed science in the early 1800s through their love of fossils. Based on real people, Mary was recognized for discovering several different dinosaur species in Lyme Regis and Elizabeth for her fish fossil collection. Enjoyed learning about the science, status of women and class, and controversy of evolution with the church pre-Darwin. The book discusses several historic figures that shaped the beginning of the science of evolution.

I have just joined this site, and I figured this book should be the first book I put a review in for. Jason Myers is such a powerful writer! His material he gives is so raw and there's no skirting around the powerful and intense words that he puts on the page. "Exit Here" is one of my ultimate favorite books and everything written in it is so in your face and it hits you like a brick wall. the character is simply mysterious in his own way, and he doesn't always do the right things but he has the best intentions. And the best thing about Jason's writing is that he puts you in their shoes and you feel either hatred, compassion, or both for whatever situation they're in. It's so amazing to have a book that isn't about happy endings or anything mushy but it touches on real things that happen to real people. He's a down to earth writer and he tells about the more bad things in the world, and shows that not everything is happy and joyful but there are ugly things to be accounted for. simply amazing and nothing less.

Finished this up last night and absolutely enjoyed it. When the movie came out I wasn't too interested, but then a friend told me this series is kind of the anti-Narnia (Pullman being so obviously being anti-church as opposed to Lewis). As an atheist (and yet a reader of the Narnia series), I was instantly curious. I definitely wanted to read the book before seeing the movie (of course) so really appriciate Dg7500 getting this to me. As I said, I really enjoyed it. The organized-religion-bashing isn't as heavy in this book as I've heard it is in the others, though it is still noticable. I liked Lyra's character (always love females with a lot of spunk) and loved the idea of deamons -- I want one! The fantasy world is richly created, though I found the so-similar-to-ours-yet-so-different thing a little disconcerting. For me, there were too many little modernized touches (of course, I can't think of one off the top of my head) that worked hard at popping the soap-bubble of fantasy. It was like hearing a suddenly sour note in an otherwise beautiful piece of music -- made me cringe for a minute, but then move on.

"Dört elle sarıldığımız birçok kıymetlerin; uğrunda, sahici bir insan gibi kalbimiz ve kafamızla yaşamayı feda ettiğimiz binlerce sözde mühim şeylerin ne kadar kolay fırlatılıp atılabildiğini bana öğreten Yusuf! Benden de sana selam olsun..." Bu paragrafa 2 yıldız, 1 yıldız da geri kalan sayfalara.

Excellent review of the history of oil from the beginning of industrialization to the Gulf War. Shorter on the really nasty details than I would have liked, but very informative.

If you read anything by Jung, read this book. This deals with his psychological theories in a much more personal way than his other work, and, as it is written in the twilight of his life, he has no fear of academic or personal reprisal. His analysis of Freud is particularly revealing- both damning and humanizing. It also gives a very powerful insight into the way that myths can be opened up for personal growth & analysis. Of course, if you want to get the most out of this book, it may help to have a book such as the Complete Works of Jung handy, so you can familiarize yourself with his terminology and the progress of his ideas. On the other hand, if you get pissed off when "scholars" begin sentences with "I think..." or "I feel...", leave it be. You'll just hurt yourself. He's completely fine with subjectivity. This book was absolutly horrifying. I now have mind pictures that will haunt me for the rest of my life. It's so hard to come to grips with the fact that people actually experience the things that this young woman went through. It really ripped my heart out. Precious' story of her recovery and the evolution of her life was beautiful. Seeing her overcome the terror of her childhood was redemptive and inspirational. I'm glad I pushed through this book but it was very hard. Parts of it made me physically ill. I had to take several breaks but in the end, her triumph made me so happy. The writing style was hard to adjust to but once I did, it pulled me in. This was a horrifically beautiful tale.

Başlangıç biraz yavaştı ama ilk birkaç bölümden sonra gerçekten toparlandı. Harika bir okuma - şimdi filmi görmeyi dört gözle bekliyorum!
