I really, REALLY liked the pacing of this book. That's the first thing I want to comment on. There's minimal buildup and a refreshing absence of long-winded exposition; the reader is hurled straight into events that progress so quickly that the most succinct way to describe this novel would be "page-turning." I devoured it in one sitting because I could not put it down in my desire to find out what would happen next. The overall concept is unique and morbidly interesting; as a former biology major, I'm familiar with the term "fenestra" as it pertains to the pores in the cells that facilitate molecular exchange, and I was curious to see how it would be carried out in a fantasy YA setting. It's a nifty idea, and quite distinctive. My inner geek was delighted by the random historical references and bits of science that Kizer scatters throughout; she has an eye for the little details that lend authenticity and relevance. However, I do think the writing leaves much to be desired; aside from being sappy in a lot of places, there are also some issues with the dialogue. The characters tend to talk in circles; there were several times when I went, "Wait, didn't they just discuss this a few pages back?" Also, while there's nothing wrong with dialogue being used to info-dump, it could have been handled more gracefully. The obligatory romance has a promising beginning, but is developed in such a forced and rushed manner that it kind of gets ridiculous in the end. Deus ex machina is all over the place, and the showdown with the Big Bad is anti-climactic, and, what's worse, almost comical. One also gets the feeling that the author doesn't have a good grasp of her characters in the sense that they fall flat and their dynamic with one another is hollow. Meridian is a pretty cool heroine, though; she's snarky, capable and full of inner strength, while at the same time still exuding the vibe of any other sixteen-year-old girl. Overall, in spite of the cardboard characters and the needs-improvement writing, this is still a very compelling read.

Cute book, but the story gets a little lost. It is ultimately not a complete story but more of a day in the path towards self discovery. Fun, easy reading antics included, but very little explanation of the magic or magical world. I think the author needed to work out a little more clearly whether the witchcraft was really a part of her story and integrate it more.

This is one of the toughest books I've ever read with a really dense writing style that challenges readers to completely immerse themselves in Wolfe's world. I didn't love the prose and thus thought the story to be somewhat slow paced. However, I'd like to come back and read this again after reading Jack Vance's Tales of a Dying Earth.

Excellent read. Gripping and a one-night project. Life changing potential. I had my 13 year old read it and he loved it too.

The first is this wonderful series of 8 books, about how orphaned Anne Shirley comes to live with Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert (by accident)! and how she becomes their beloved Anne with an E.

I read lots of conflicting reviews for this book and was wondering if i should pick it up, but i thought it was a very different story as i get bored with the same old thing i did decide to read it so this was not my usual book no sexy vampires etc but the lead male is strong and for once is not the one that comes in to save the day the female lead character is also strong finding her way in a world that has not changed where as she has changed with a death only in this case it was her own in this way i can compare it to when we lose someone and think the world changes and it gos on even though its never the same for us.I am not giving anything away but it happens early in the book but the following events happen in quick succession enough to keep you wondering what will happen in the end, it lacks lots of the real butt kicking action i love although enough moments to keep you going i will say no more on that as i dont want to spoil the end,it also has the tension and paranormal romance angle to keep you interested.I will say i think most of the people who didnt like the book may not like some aspects of her turmoil about her end if she does not get the drugs she needs now to stay in a life like state and some of the gut-wrenching gory parts of the book which are few but you feel her fear of the what ifs of how her life may end if shes not able to access the drug.In toatal i enjoyed this book and i read it in two days it was new and fresh well in story not in image sometimes and i will look forward to the next book.

I loved the character of Stephen Ross when he was introduced as a boy in A Time for Dreams and then as a man in the MacDonnell Brides Trilogy. In this book he is down and out until he meets Deidre MacKay again. I loved the inclusion of the supernatural blood witches; it mixes two of my favorites--Scottish setting with vampires.
