*long, silent scream* I’m sorry, but WHY WHY WHY WHY is this book an “international best seller?” Is this like the Stephan Hawkins book where everyone buys it and no one reads it or just pretends to? This book was 299 pages long (I kept flipping to back and checking it the whole time I was reading it), and it was FANTASTICALLY boring. Unless you really really REALLY like geology, run far far away from this book. Though it claims to be a biography about the unfortunate founder of Geology, William Smith, it’s more a long and tedious blabber fest on fossils and stratification in England. I think it’s already starting to leak out of my brain. Though the story about Smith is compelling and tragic, it doesn’t REALLY begin until the last 100 pages of the book. The 200 pages preceding that just go on…and on…and on. If it wasn’t for the fact that I feel an almost divine power over me to finish every book I start, I would have turned this into toilet paper long ago. The only other good thing I can say about it, is that it does paint a detailed picture of the horrendously painful injustice of classicism in 19th century England. Otherwise, unless rocks get your rocks off….. read Hawkins.

Beautiful but hard to read at times because of the raw emotion. Highly recommend it!

Ok, but worthy of a pulitzer? I don't know.

If I had read "Before the Dawn" two years ago I don't think it would have made much of an impression on me, but because of the current economic crisis Hughes' story of a struggling group of Relief Society sisters during the Great Depression felt oddly relatable (is that a word?). I couldn't help but place myself in the story, and also draw parallels between its characters and women in my own ward.

A delightful, easy read that reminds us that there are people in this world who do not need our Western material values to be happy.

This story is about French life under German occupation, and the author actually wrote this book during the German occupation of France in World War II. This would make for a really interesting story, except for the fact that Irene Nemirovsky died in a concentration camp in 1942. Suite Francaise was intented to be a three-part novel, but only the first two parts were actually finished. The last section is an appendix that consists of excerpts from the author's notebook where she makes shorthand notes about what she's planning to write in the third part of the novel. Unfortunately, we never actually get to read that part, making this an interesting but ultimately frustrating book.

This one caught my eye because it was on sale, the blurb compares it to Amelie Poulain, plus I love the cover artist's work here and in general (this dude got me to buy a book more than once simply by making an awesome cover). However, the cover contains a typo (in the author's name!), and the reviews here are not that favorable, so maybe this wouldn't be a good purchase...

Like Wuthering Heights, this features a narrator who becomes caught up in the lives of unconventional people and then relates their goings-on. Told at one or sometimes two removes--the narrator relating a conversation with a third party about the story's key character, Gauguin-not-Gauguin--the subject matter loses some vibrancy and immediacy.

I love true stories, especially when they're funny. I also like examining human interactions. Oh so interesting, these tidbits into David's life are hilarious. And I don't laugh out loud easily...but he pushed all the right buttons ;)
