I enjoyed Borrowman's character development. And I loved how the main characters weren't invincible. It was a touching tale and educational for me. Not as gripping as other war novels, but I enjoyed it...a fast read.

Naoki Urasawa is a plot master! Weaving such great stories. Monster is one of my favorite stories/series' of all-time. When I heard about 20th Century Boys from a friend whilst inquiring as to what manga/graphic novel I should read next, I had no idea it was written by Urasawa. I'm so glad he lent me this copy of the first volume. 20th Century Boys is about a group of childhood friends who started a secret society for a short while, fort and all, even went as far as to create an emblem for their group. Shortly thereafter it was forgotten, gone with the summer. Years later when they are all grown up one of the childhood group, Donkey, commits suicide, or so the news/police report; however, this friend contacted the main character Kenji asking him if he remembered their old emblem as it had turned up again, also another person who worked with Donkey AND their whole family goes missing and outside their door the emblem is written. A new cult also emerges in their town worshiping someone called "Friend," this cult also uses the same childhood emblem. Urasawa's writing style hasn't lost a beat in this new series, he sells the story well seamlessly transitioning from Kenji's childhood and the present day, and Urasawa leaves me wanting more as was the case with EVERY volume of Monster. I can't wait to see where the plot goes. Highest possible recommendation for manga lovers of the serious fiction/suspense type or anyone who just loves good writing and plot twists.

The Pirate Coast is an exciting non-fiction tale about a virtually unknown American hero, William Eaton, dispatched by President Jefferson on a Lawrence of Arabia-like quest through the Mediterranean and North Africa. His mission, to combat a Barbary Pirate state defiantly imprisoning over 300 of the country’s sailors, defines his life and changes history, becoming America’s first military incursion in the Middle East. The first two thirds of the book read as an adventure story. The events of Eaton’s secret mission to attack Tripoli, modern Libya, are often hard to believe, though well documented by the author Richard Zacks. One can quickly recognize the book’s greatest strength, as Zacks enjoys telling the seedy side of history, relishing in the often overlooked accounts of scandal, affairs, dirty deeds, pervasive debt, and human cruelty wherever he can find evidence of them. The last third of the book changes substantially upon the mission’s ending, when Eaton returns to the United States and becomes involved in political intrigue, alcoholism, gambling, and crushing debt. The book’s greatest weakness is this shocking shift in pace and topic, as an adventure story turns into a depressing biographical account of a man on a downward spiral far removed from his extraordinary exploits in the Middle East.

This waw an easy book to put down, I didn't enjoy as much as I hoped I would. I didn't like how it was written. Each woman's life was introduced with and event that happend after she was married and had young children. Then the narration of the event would stop and the story would go backward to her grandmother. Then it would catch up to the event the chapter started with and continue on. If the authors didn't have enought information, they would say that this is how she probably lived and what she probably did. I'm not sure if I liked that. On one hand it's nice to have a general idea of what life was like then but on the other hand, if they weren't sure it happened to her then don't put it in.

I have no problem saying that I really loved this book. The romance and the passion was so strong. Mixed well with suspense and the realm of mysticism. All around the good vs. evil idea (what is really good and what is really evil).

Set in the time just past the Korean Conflict, this is a tender story of a family with secrets and deep, passionate loves. Many reviewers have said the prose is "luminous" and I have to agree. There is so much dark in this book that the poetry of the writing really lifts it out of the ordinary. It's told in several voices. Termite, who is mute, nearly blind and immobilized--even Termite's voice is heard and Phillips conveys his voice as if it were a mosaic of sound. Really good and brave of her. Some of the deep thoughts of the characters get in the way of the story. For instance, at times you wonder why Termite's father's narrative is included. I felt it added very little and even what we learn about his early years as he remembers them. But it was Lark's voice that I found most compelling. Nearly 18, caring for her brother Termite, little by little she learns her family's history and then makes some amazing decisions that move her beyond the past, while still honoring it. I recommend it if you like rich prose, fascinating characters and some interest in the Korean War and its aftermath.

This quote from Dorothy Parker sums up my feelings on this book: "This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force." That's exactly what I did when I got to the completely predictable (and incredibly disappointing) "surprise" ending. I really can't believe I persevered that long.

Jesus God, this is a well written book. Nothing like watching a character drown in a sea of suburban middle class mediocrity and realize he's basically you two years ago.

Under the Dome is an epic disaster-science-fiction novel. It’s a classic Stephen King story. Much like The Stand, it’s about a community of people who are on their own and have internal and external problems to deal with. The novel is a little more than 1000 pages so there’s a whole lot going on and it would be difficult to summarize it in 100 words. Basically, there’s a small town that all of a sudden has an invisible and invincible dome surrounding it. The dome makes it so nothing and no one can get in and out of the town. The community has to band together and start governing its self and some people let the power go to their head. I loved this novel. There’s so many well-crafted characters that you get to know, love and hate. The action and suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat. To top it all off the mystery of where the dome came from is on the character’s and the reader’s mind right up until the end.

An interesting autobiography by a woman who was raised in a wealthy, troubled (to put it mildly) family.
