I discovered that I'd read this book after reading a quote in the front of another book. I remember reading about old Eguchi. I can vividly recall the way he took note of the room and the woman. But I have no recollection of the title, the author, or indeed of reading this book. And yet I have read it, and can retell the story. Poetic and explorative. I remember feeling nervous as he entered the room, and as if I were an intruder as he studied the sleeping woman. I now want to read it again.

This has some of the best poetry exercises around, without being intimidating. Loads of fun.

I got kind of tired of this book. Maybe it was the biblical-ish writing style. Interesting to read biblical stories from a woman's perspective, for sure, but a little dry. But then again, I'm picky.

Great book if you like swimming, which I do. Amazing what this 41-year-old mother accomplished in the Olympics. For someone with an A++ personality, she sure jumped around a lot; I would've preferred it a little more chronological, because when I go back to re-read a certain part, I have a hard time finding it. It is very motivating, and makes me want to run another marathon (it's been 5 years now). Overall a fascinating story. 2014---Just reread this 5 years later. I'm now the same age that Dara Torres was when she won her Olympic medals, and in those 5 years I've dealt with a few life changes including a thyriod cancer diagnosis and subsequent years of battling fatigue and adjusting to synthetic thyriod medication. Through it all, I've kept exercising because it feels good even when it doesn't feel good! This book gives me great motivation to push myself physically. My primary sport is running, but all the same lessons apply.

Okay, I'll admit that I got caught up on the vampire bandwagon in high school, so I've got (or have had) quite a few vampire books on my shelves. This is one of the best. The author does a great job of creating a world where it's just a fact of life that there are Others in the world - not just vampires, but were-creatures, demons, imps, etc. This world isn't one that feels forced or particularly dark - it's just the way things are. Sunshine, the protagonist, is a believable, likeable character who behaves as one might when faced with a set of bizarre and difficult circumstances. I wanted to know more about this alternate universe and the people in it.

Totally enjoyed this book. I must admit I was a bit reluctant to read the second book to this saga but I was wonderfully suprised. I loved the main characters and was pleased that the author brought characters from the previous book to this one. Especially Blaise and his comical personality. The banter between the characters was refreshing and hilarious. I was hoping the ending would have been a bit more satisfying but hopeful that the next book will include Varian,Merewyn and of course Blaise again.

In school we listened to and read some of Martin Luther King's speeches and in recent years I had read a sermon or two of his, but that was the breadth of my experience with his work. Having now read the autobiography, I think it should be required reading in high schools. As many reviewers have mentioned, it is a little strange to call it an autobiography. However, there is so much first hand accounts that I don't really have a problem with it. I don't think that the editor, Clayborne Carson steered the book in a way unbefitting to King. The book gives you a thorough account of King's actions and involvement in the civil rights movement, as well as insight into his personal struggles. Two things really struck me about King's character throughout the book: his willingness to sacrifice and his strong faith in God. He (and his wife) were willing to sacrifice not only their time, efforts and resources but also their security in order to fight for civil rights. It doesn't seem that many Americans these days are willing to sacrifice much of anything for anything. The second aspect that struck me, his faith in God, is well-known. However, it was remarkable to read how he was constantly questioning himself, checking his motives and his intentions and realigning himself with God's will. His faith and his actions resulting from that faith are stunningly humbling. Another thing that I think is worth mentioning is the social power of the church. This account demonstrates how the church at one time really was a social engine in the community. Nearly all of King's civil rights movements were organized through and in the church or affiliates of the church. It's unclear to me if this would still be the case today. I think that generally, America's churches need to reconsider their missions, both in advocacy and community service. The book ends with King's last speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop" and his last sermon "The Drum Major Instinct." You can't help but get chills reading these, as it seems that King has come to the realization that his days are numbered and has made peace with this and with God. There are too many outstanding quotes to mention...just go read it!

Robert Fitzgibbons is a talented yet unhappy young man. All of us can learn that sometimes you just have to go for it and not look back to become a happier, more fulfilled person.
