Throughout the book it is told through two different view points. One view point is telling the story of Jacob as he goes to find more infomation about his grandfather who was in World War 2. The second view point is told through his grandmother who is back in the middle of the war and how her and her husband meet. There are many differences throughout the novel from American and Holland culture. Some of the main ones are that most of the cities in holland still have a midevil look to them as in America most of the cities are more modern with tall new buildings. Most the people in Holland know both english and dutch as in America people mostly just know english. I think that the author wrote this book to show how the war 50 years ago is still effecting the people of today. It is shown throughout the book that jacob does not know who his real grandfather is until he reads his grandmother book. The war effected Jacob by him not knowing who his real grandfather was. I think that the theme of the book is to never quit until you are done with your goal. Jacob's grandmother is a prime example of this by her helping all the wounded soldiers and her lover jacob. Geertrui throughout the novel is determined to get Jacob better, she is trying to get back to full strengh until the day he dies. This shows that you should never give up until the you have reached your goal. I would recommend this book to someone who likes World War or someone who likes alot of action. The chapters that talked about the war I thought were alot more interesting then the chapters in present day but the present chapters were also good.

I really enjoyed the idea behind this book. It's interesting to see what happens when a helpful idea turns out of control. Initially, the people in this society were given cosmetic surgery when they turned 16, in order to put everyone on equal footing. That way, no one would be judged by appearances. They were also assigned specific jobs and changed in other ways to avoid conflict. On the surface, it may sound like a good idea, but the idea changed the people so much, they couldn't even think for themselves. Until they were 16, they thought themselves to be ugly. After the surgery, they didn't have to deal with consequences or accept responsibility for anything. I feel another message of this book is that beauty is not just skin deep. As Tally gets to know David, she no longer things of him as ugly, but as beautiful. The only complaint I have of this book, is the amount of attention given to certain subjects. I felt some things were over explained while I wanted to know more about other things. I am excited for the next chapter in this series.

Never Have I Ever picks up right where The Lying Game left off (a week or so later). Emma is a little more comfortable living Suttons life, but the big factor she is worrying about, is who is the killer? is it her sister? her best friends? her x-boyfriend? someone else Sutton managed to piss off? This book was full of suspense and drama. You will think you have the killer figured out a couple of times, but Miss. Shepard likes to drag us along for a bit of a longer ride than we want. (but thats ok, the inbetween stuff is pretty awesome). now i cant wait for the last? book Two Truths And A Lie.

I read this ARC on the plane ride home from the New York SCBWI conference, and I finished it in that one sitting--pacy, intriguing, and so much tension I think I was holding my breath the last forty-five minutes of the flight. A good read, and I can't wait to see what Anne does with the sequel.

I'll always read what Lee writes, but I'm baffled by the critical praise this book received. His narrator is a retired landscaper who's Italian-American, but I just never bought that Lee was comfortable in this skin. He alternates between overwriting aggressively long sentences and using slang and tough-guy talk that just never seems plausible, as if the narrator has to remind himself of his role but continues to fall out of character. Some sentences were so tangled by their ambition, I'd find myself unable to get past them; they were so intractable. It's not that I couldn't believe a landscaper could philosophize for pages about human potential, but that the man seemed to be torn between two voices that never quite met. Regardless of his narrator's background, Lee can get caught up in his love for particular words like "angle" (v.) and "accrue" and I couldn't help wondering if there was a 12-step program for getting over such a specific idiolect addiction (ah, an editor). Thankfully, he manages to make everything come together in that last tenth of the book and we understand what he's been building up to, like a puzzle that suddenly reveals itself (or perhaps that's my convincing myself it was worth the struggle), but it ultimately can't fully erase my memory of all the awkward passages that preceded it. (2.5 stars)

Really, really enjoyed this book. It was nice to read a slightly more tame China Mieville. His love and description of the cities he places his characters inside of in his books is fantastic. It's much less 'Weird' than his other books and I found that better suited to my tastes. I have to say - the blurb on the back of the book is really accurate on this one. If your in the mood for a quasi Chandler/Kafka/Dick mash-up - this is a great place to visit.
