** spoiler alert ** I read this book because I was curious at how Stephenie Meyer was going to evolve out of her Twilight fame. Would it be the same book with a different plot or the same characters with different names? Fortunately, The Host was a little different. Still extremely cheesy (even for my hopelessly romantic taste) but atleast it's not just about oggling after a guy. As many others have expressed before me, Mel/Wanda (the female lead) was actually likable. Lovable even. Unlike Twilight's Bella who I wanted to strangle at the first few pages of the first book. And that Ian and Jared are not perfect is nice too. I loved Ian more though, despite the fact that he tried to kill Wanda in the beginning which was understandable considering she invaded his planet and all that. I love the way he understands her and knows what to do for her to be happy even when Wanda herself doesn't know. Jared's character, I think is more human. Because of how he is, ruthless and vengeful when he sees Mel as a host. And then the confusion he feels to letting her go even when he didn't know there's a chance to get her back for real. Mercifully, this love triangle is not as biased as in the Twilight series. The Edward vs Jacob thing was unfair because we all knew Edward was going to win no matter what because Bella was just soooo in love with him. This time though, it was almost a fair match. I also enjoyed the plot, although it's not exactly perfectly set. I find myself narrowing my eyes at some lines and things or events here and there but enjoyable nevertheless. I was also grateful that Ian didn't have to suffer. I was really hoping Wanda gets caught out of her suicide attempt not for her, because the story would be so much more dramatic if she did die, but for Ian. It doesn't seem fair that Jared gets Mel and he gets nothing. I liked that the characters have more depth than they had in her Twilight series. This time, her characters had more serious stuff to weigh and ponder about. And they had more opportunities to understand who they really are inside and a lot of room to grow and be better. All in all it was a good book which I enjoyed. And if truth be told, it good me hooked emotionally (it got me laughing at some parts and crying near the end). So, I give it a 3.

** spoiler alert ** I admit, I watched True Blood before I read the books, and I intentionally waited until after Season 2 had finished airing as sort of a... well, I don't know what. But it took willpower! It's interesting to note the differences between the book and the show, and perhaps because True Blood airs painfully slowly, one hour a week, the book seemed to just fly by. While I was definitely on Team Bill for the TV show, the Vampire Bill of the books doesn't seem quite as indispensably RIGHT for Sookie. So now I feel totally fine with my slight defection to Team Eric -- and that's why I'll probably read the next eight books, oh, tonight or thereabouts. TL;DR: Fast read, fun, less-sexy-than-TV Vampire Bill, needs more Eric. Quick read.

Incredibly intruiging book. I liked a lot of his ideas and concepts. You have to sift through some ego and "personality" but the concepts are interesting and applicable across the board. Definitely a recommended read.

I'm not more clever about Hemingway, after reading Harold Bloom, but I now can see Hemingway widely, as I always like his short stories much better than his novels.

Michael Ian Black just has that that special sense of humor that people either 'get' or react poorly to. "My Custom Van" is the perfect example of that humor. Each concise, achingly humorous essay in his new book taps at a certain comedic funny bone. While this bone may not exist in us all, I am happy to say it is part of my skeletal frame. Short, punchy and often downright strange, Black tackles issues both inane and, well, more inane. But he does it with style. From Billy Joel at a dinner party to letters to a adolescent childhood sexual exploits, no out-of-bounds corners are cut, and the book is better for it. There is nothing about this book that screams "must read," but if you have enjoyed Black in any of his television offerings, this book will make for great toilet reading. My guess is Black would have it no other way.

Normally not a huge fan of the whole metaphysical/magical realism genre, but this is a great book

WOW!! A very powerful and well-written story. Slightly meandering at times, but still amazing.
