Jeff Eugenides obviously did a great deal of genetic research into the subject matter of this well written novel about a coming of age hermaphrodite, going back in time to trace the genetic history of Calliope, her/his parents, grandparents and their Greek ancestry. Its a sort of genetic detective story. Fascinating, funny, touching and a book for all genders. The writing is poetic, the story imaginative, and it allows compassion and understanding about a rare and not well understood genetic condition.

This is the book I use to teach my drawing class. If you want to learn to drawm it is quite helpful. Trust the crazy exercises she recommends (like drawing without looking at your page), they all have a utility that only comes out in hindsight. I do think though that all her blah on right/left side of the brain differentiation is crap. You don't need to know any of that to make her exercises applicable.

This book was well researched and well written. I would recommend it for anyone, especially during these uncertain economic times. I will never look at a Wal-Mart Associate, waitress or hotel worker in the same light. All honest work deserves a livable salary. There needs to be a much larger middle class who can afford to eat healthy food, live in a safe place and can afford health care. How we resolve that massive problem, I'm not certain but it certainly isn't by beating down people who are already struggling so hard, 365 days a year.

** spoiler alert ** The unusual Virginia vineyard setting and a likable and vulnerable protagonist form the basis for what you would expect to be a cozy mystery. Lucie Montgomery is first painted as a young woman who ran away to France after a car accident left her with a badly-damaged leg, became involved with the wrong man, and grudgingly returns home when her father is killed. But she instantaneously becomes an obstinate and bull-headed fighter for the family house and vineyard that she's completely ignored for the past two years. Furthermore, the author repeatedly describes Lucie's frailties and then grants her near-superhuman powers to overcome the enemy. Unfortunately, a well-plotted story falls apart when the protagonist's actions are totally inconsistent and unbelievable.

Has some of the dreamlike quality of The Virgin Suicides, but it's a little more business like and formal in the sense that he had to use traditional plot advancement to push the story. Overall, I thought it was a great read. Lefty and Desdemona were comical. Calliope and the Obscured Object were kind of heartbreaking. It was interesting the way the narrator chose to refer to her best friend as "the Object".
