I saw the Oscar winning movie when I was still a teenager and I liked it. However, the novel is too long for a topic quite short. I read that Judith Guest intended this to be a short story and I thought that she should have stick to it. I thought it could have been more effective if the story explains why did the mother became cold and indifferent. Mothers are not always like that especially if she has already lost one son and only one is still alive.

NOT MY KIND OF HERO I like this author's writing style and enjoyed her book 'Saving Nathaniel', but this one wasn't for me. I kept waiting for the MC, Brian, to grow and mature over the course of the story, but he never did. The ending was strange, too, and it was largely unsatisfying. Only for her writing style and some good laughs here and there, I give Ward two stars.

Obviously, a pretty funny book. Some of Biffs humor fell into the cheesy sitcom sort, but i definitely laughed out loud a few times. Also, it's possible I would have enjoyed this book even more if I had some biblical knowledge. I think there were parts of the story where I should have been thinking "Oh, I can't believe he's referencing that biblical passage/story in this way." Regardless, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to all.

Quinoa is one of my favorite new foods. It can be used at any meal. It will be interesting to work my way through the 170 recipes in this book.

A bit biased, as I wrote it :) Dammed is a story about one man’s descent into insanity and depravity and, possibly, redemption — tautly written, one part ode to a beautiful city, one part grand tour into a depraved mind. A hard-drinking, womanizing travel writer lands the sweetest honey of an assignment ever and sets off for Amsterdam. There’s just one problem: his travel companion. Darwin J. Jones, though everyone calls him Win, takes being a bad influence seriously. Before long, the two set aside research, and drinks, drugs and women consume their time. Soon, even this is not enough. From a spreading shadow of madness, the truth starts to emerge: that Win may be harboring a much darker side.

Okay, this appears to be total chick lit but considering the summary reads like a personal fantasy of my own, well, how could I not cave and add it to the list? haha

My love for history initially drew me to this book. Although, I doubt if everything in the story did happen in real life, it does afford a detailed look into life and political climate of Britain and Wales during those years. History aside, there is the more intimate story of John and his daughter, Joanna, which although close and strong at the beginning ultimately becomes strained and turbulent once Joanna marries one of her father's enemies. It's John and Joanna's relationship as father and daughter, both so alike and yet so different, that really appealed to me. It seemed authentic enough, as if this may well have been just another father-daughter tale. But against the historical backdrop, Penman has magically turned these petty family squabbles and loyalties into a matter of historical importance.

I really enjoyed A Crack in Everything which is the debut mystery novel by Angela Gerst. Susan Callisto is a lawyer and a political consultant in Boston. Her world is turned upside down when possible politician Charles Renfrow walks into her life. Charles or Chaz as he is known is a charmer and he is the head of a biotech company that has questionable environmental concerns on the horizon. His $20,000 retainer is to attractive for the struggling political consultant to pass up. Then the bodies start piling up. And Susan's ex Detective Lieutenant Michael Bennett walks back into her life. As the plot thickens Susan has to examine all of the relationships in her life. All of a sudden people aren't who they seemed to be. As everyone's masks begin to slip, Susan realizes that everything in her life is filled with cracks... Highly recommend this debut mystery novel. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the Susan Callisto series by Angela Gerst.
