Once again a book read to me as a bedtime story but I have since rediscovered it for it's deep meaning and beauty.

Reading this in French was trying but Herge is a fantastic satirist. The historic backdrop is solid. Highly enjoyable.

This is a wonderful selection of poetry. There are child-friendly poems by Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Edward Lear, Robert Louis Stevenson, and many others.

This is probably one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. The ideas are laid out in the most straightforward way possible and the author doesn't gloss over uncomfortable truths in his book's premise. I highly recommend it!

The art in this book is amazing. I kept wanting to take pictures out of it, blow them up on a copier and frame them. I restrained myself. This is an interesting and sad story about how the author and his family were adversely affected by his older brother's epilepsy. It gives an interesting picture of life in France in the 1970's, and the many and varied treatments they attempted hopefully, in an effort to cure him.

To trust or not to trust, that is basically the underlying theme of this book. I enjoyed the myriad journeys toward one cohesive end. Admittedly, until the end approached, I wasn't exactly sure how everything could tie together, but it did in a way that was very interesting and satisfying. This was only my 2nd Harlan Coben book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Now THIS is how you write a thriller with its roots firmly in popcorn movie scripts and just a touch of literary aspiration. I can't give it five stars because the premise is a bit borrowed (hello, Memento) and there's a couple of spots where you can spot the boom mike in the shot. Hey, this is bound to be a movie, I'll get started with that sort of thing now. Also, some of the stuff re: cause of massive defects in memory didn't really ring super-true.

As a physician I was fascinated to learn that the first blood transfusions were attempted way back in the 1660's. However, what really made this book interesting was the contrasting reactions in England and France. Not only is this a fascinating story from the early days of science, it provides an excellent example of how things like politics and religions affect scientific inquiry. That's what makes this story relevent for 21st Century readers. Not only that, it includes a pretty good murder mystery. Note: Holly Tucker will be my guest on my Books and Ideas podcast in April 2011.

Second time round, and good 10 years after I first read it An Area of Darkness surprised me more than I expected. Okay, so Naipaul is at best an arch miserablist, but I had forgotten just how negative and mean he is about Indians and the whole Indian experience. However the middle section dealing with his time in Kashmir is wonderfully arch, with the previously-forgotten Aziz an amazingly Falstaffian character, simultaneously protecting the tourists, whilst fleecing them at every opportunity. Also, I presume had I bothered reading this whilst I was actually doing my Post-Colonial Literature coursework, I might have done slightly better than a Desmond because there's plenty of theoretical meat concerning the Indian reaction and absorbtion to the English (and vice versa) to get your teeth into.
