*published on Mundie Moms on June 26, 2011* Jackson Pearce's companion book to last year's Sisters Red plays with the familiarity of "Hansel and Gretel" while using Jackson's own world of the dark and disturbing Fenris. A stop in a small town and an introduction to the local chocolatier, Sophia, leads Gretchen on a journey of not just self-disovery but also of resolution. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Gretchen's own twin sister is somehow connected to the identical strange disappearances of young girls in Live Oak. And these disappeances appear to be linked to the Chocolate Festival thrown by the sweetly alluring Sophia. Jackson's world-building skills are well honed as she constructs the slow, hot days which build up to the festival. Just like Gretchen, I was lulled into the predictability of each day. I awaited the fragrance of the latest confections and happily watched romance develop between Sophia and Ansel. But just as I grew comfortable with the story, Jackson started to build an unexpected twist in Gretchen's character. And one that I liked a lot. Let's just say that Gretchen quickly became one of my favorite characters of 2011. Don't let the slow build-up and the sweet smell of candy fool you, there is one heart-pounding climax in those last 100 pages. And how Jackson resolves the mystery of the disappearing girls pays tribute both to the original folklore as well as her own Fenris mythology. This tale is not at all a sugar-coated fantasy but a story which will surprise you with its dark, romantic nature. I encourage all of you who enjoy a well-crafted, fresh take on a folktale to pour a glass of sweet tea and pick up Sweetly when it's released this summer.

William Morris' able translation was somewhat hampered by the poor quality of the edition that I read, which included many typographical errors, including rendering the names of characters incorrectly on a few occasions. I was keeping track of the bewildering familial relationships and feuds with a hand-drawn flow chart, which helped to draw out some of the interlaced themes and reoccuring events, but it led me to notice a rather glaring problem: What happened to Sigmund, son of Sigurd? He's mentioned only once by name and only twice in total, and then I think he ceases to exist only a page after his second mention. I wonder if this is due to source material for the saga disagreeing on whether or not Sigurd even had a son by Gudrun. Anyway, this version has helped me sort out some of the confusion I had when reading Tolkien's translation, so I am grateful to it for that at least, even if it added some new confusion to the mix!

I'm a huge fan of Chely Wright and I support her LikeMe Organization with monthly book proceed donations. I'm sure this book will touch many lives. She was honest and forthcoming in her story. Her story is an inspiration.

Not a bad read, but disappointing for a Newbery medalist. A lot of the writing seemed too meta-literary for the target readership to comprehend or appreciate, and even some of the vocabulary I thought was too esoteric. The book also uses a multiple-narrative perspective throughout, which I find too fragmentary. At the end the auther pulls together the pieces (somewhat) for the reader, but not enough to justify a novel that felt like random camera angles shot for the sake of being "artsy". I get the fact that many sophisticated writers want to play with their audience a little, but why would you do this when your audience is middle schoolers??

After having read two holocaust books back to back this one has made me more aware of the horrors of the holocaust whereas "An Interrupted Life"is a diary of a 27 year old girl, therefore a more personal account.

It's the longest audiobook I've listened to to date (14 discs). The story is thoroughly told, which can be good or bad, depending upon your preference. Questions that arise from the storyline: when do attempts to protect someone begin to do more harm than good? Is it anyone's place to try to shield another from certain experiences and emotions? How do we decide?

Nineteen-year-old me would have really, really loved this book. Older me just liked it. Not much happens; it's more of a mood piece. (You might say a moody teenager piece.) I'd like to see the movie.
