An incredibly insightful book- while the main storyline is certainly enjoyable, the subtext concerning the US economy & death of US industry could not be more accurate for today's current events... and this was written in the early 90s.

This was a really interesting book. Although I normally like fantasy as you all know. This was more about the supernatural (I guy who sees ghosts) and though it sounds kind of cheesy it was really well thought out and well written. good literature all around. It's stephen king-like with less of the really creepy aspect, and better written.

This book changed my way of thinking about the afterlife. I am not spiritual but it gave me hope. I insist every woman reads this. This book is amazing and it helped me answer a lot of questions for me and to heal some wounds. Susie is already in heaven when the book begins. She is watching over her family and friends and tells us of the events that cause her to get to heaven. She watches her family being torn apart by her "disappearance". Her father is in a never ending vendetta to find her killer and becomes quietly obsessed. Her sister is just trying to be a teenager and trying to fit in and her little brother is confused because his can’t really remember his big sister. She follows them, in heaven for several years. She also follows her murderer. As it says in the book jacket it is suspenseful, loving, and full of memories.

Box is an excellent mystery/outdoor adventure writer. His series about forester Joe Pickett follows the family through numerous postings and traumas. I guess I'm having a "why do TERRIBLE things always happen to Joe" moment---one man can not possibly run into so many evil people. He's a really nice guy, almost too nice, and yet the world keeps stomping on him, they live in crummy houses, more wounds ensue. I think I need a hiatus!

Fairy tales often give little girls wrong impressions. That there's always Prince Charming to save a young maiden when she needs one. But "Ella Enchanted", a retelling of Cinderella which only paralleled the original story in the last quarter of the book, appeals to make women strong and courageous and not to always rely on the aid of Prince Charming. It tells women to 'rescue yourself'. I loved the book. It entertained me so much that I couldn't stop reading. The characters are not that original but they have been touched with rare qualities that are often absent in most books. Every character has her or his own say. They are not characters who "exists-just-because-they-are-needed" types. They are, on one way or another opinionated characters who are essential to make the heroine's life wonderful, or cruel, or bearable. Unlike the original Cinderella, there's a good character development between Ella and Char. It goes to show that the happily ever after did not come that easily. They really worked for it so they have to cherish that happily ever after, "laughing and loving" each other. On that note, I would like to say that I am amazed by the way the author constructed such a wonderful story line. It's very rare for a retelling to impact the way "Ella Enchanted" has. Five stars couldn't even suffice my praise for it. =p

4.5 stars - maybe I was in a generous mood; perhaps I really did like this book:) The other reviews already give a lot of details so I'll just mention that I did not find it a rollercoaster ride as one or two of the reviewers did. Nor I detect any BDSM theme, not the way I'd find in a book from that genre, anyway. The only thing that I can say comes close to a BDSM theme is that Landon is a kept as a prisoner by Kirith for 3 months purely for sex. Landon's fears of being sexually abused and/tortured proves groundless and readers will, instead, be treated to a sweet, poignant romance which blooms despite the lack of faith in either man that there is a future for them as a couple. As is usual, none of this is communicated and the growing love is displayed by their actions and responses to each other as both men ruminate on their circumstances. Just when I thought this story was going to be pure romance with just that pinch of suspense at the start, the suspense-action thread picks up. At this point of the story, the once-fragile, frightened Landon is a trained warrior - and anxious to rush to the rescue of the man he's come to love. Kirith has been captured, along with his young daughter, and the book comes to a climactic and satisfying end. The lush tropical island setting plus imprisoned sex slave reminds me of another similar Mm romance. I've forgotten the title/author but remember it was quite, quite horrible. J C Owens made up for that one and made me love tropical island romances again:) ...now off to check if I bought any of the author's previous work.

This is not a thrilling book in any way, and gets kind of convoluted, but the details are unmatched. If you are a writer, this is a good book to read for instruction. Wonderful, powerful images throughout.
