I first discovered Wendell Berry when as an undergraduate at Southeastern University I recieved his poem "How to Be A Poet (to remind myself)" in my school mailbox as a gift from my advisor's wife, as I had recently presented Billy Collins to her freshmen composistion class. The poem has been on my bathroom mirror ever since, reminding me every morning of the virtues of silence, meditation, tranquility, and being present to ones surroundings. His poems seem to reflect his quest to practice these virtues in all that he does. As a person of faith, I've found his poetry to be highly edifying and uplifting, challenging me to practice peace through the worship of contemplation.

Post-read: Well... not my favorite thing ever, but it was worth the read, as it's such a short book and a classic. I thought it was really interesting that the bulk of the story is told from Dr. Jekyll's lawyer-friend's point of view. It's a mystery, really. The friend knows there is a connection between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he can't figure out why an upstanding citizen like Jekyll would have ANYTHING to do with the nefarious Hyde. So, over the course of the story, he's trying to figure out what's going on between the two of them.... It's interesting! I'm really surprised that this book (even the picture-book version) would be in the juvenile fiction section of the library! First of all, I doubt a j-fic reader would understand half of the words in the story (it's 1895 language, after all). Second, it has a QUITE violent scene, where Mr. Hyde beats a guy to death with his cane. Geez! I was like, "Whoa! Holy cow!" But it was quite an interesting tale about the duality of a person's character... not that I necessarily agree with late 19th century psychology or anything.... but it was interesting... Pre-read: This may "technically" be a children's book, but it contains the full text, just with pictures and insights into the Victorian Era. I'm kind of excited about that. Books with pictures are fabulous, aren't they?

This book links Marconi's development of the trans-Atlantic wireless and a very unusual murder case in London, the Crippen case. As usual, Larson starts slowly (in this case, very slowly), laying out all of background facts, then weaves the two events to a point that is intriguing. However, the detailed difficulties encountered by Marconi were often tedious and more technical than I needed or wanted.

I have really enjoyed learning about this time period after reading The other boleyn girl. It has inspired me to keep reading more of Philippa Gregory's books.

I don't think there is another author I have read that can intrigue me and make me feel so torn at the same time as Jodi Picoult. Vanishing Acts drew me in completely and gave me insight into why there are so many things that can't always be black and white. Can a father legally "take" his daughter and run away to remove her from a dangerous situation? The law calls it kidnapping. This book reminds me that our laws cannot allow for shades of gray. Can they? I really enjoy this author!

Intriguing and thought-provoking, but by the end I was bored. I highly recommend the first half though.

This is hard SF at its best. Intelligent reasonable characters doing interesting things in an exotic yet plausible setting. Also, the ending has a lovely twist.

Reading it once thru was somewhat repetitive, but the book is well organized and it has a lot of valuable information. It can be even more helpful for visitors, but as someone who wants to live in London, I learned a great deal too. There are nice pictures, but I wished there was a better map of the greater London area.
