I put this book on my to-read list after watching the movie. I didn't like the movie, mostly because of the story, but thought that maybe reading the book would give me what I was missing. Well, it did; it was a horribly slow read. I slogged through it, though, and I still don't really like the story, although I appreciate it more. The book pointed out one thing over and over: there are many perspectives to every scene in life. Briony liked to write about every single perspective in agonizing detail. And I suspect Ian McEwan does as well. And although Briony was presented so tragically, I don't think I ever forgave her for her horrible transgression; never bought into her lifelong atonement. And therefore, that must be why I still don't like the story.

Though I could commiserate with some of the stories in this book, I found it oddly tilted towards those who've gone through their entire lives overweight, as opposed to those of us who've gained weight in adulthood--which lends to a whole different mindset and set of issues. An average read, yet easy to get through.

Set in 2190 (I think) after some catastrophe has detroyed all modern civilization on Earth. It seems to start in the middle of the story, which would be fine it was eventually resolved, but it wasn't. The two main characters seem to be over a 1000 years old as they remember how everything used to be. Oh, and they have a plane...and guns. They then proceed to attempt to rebuild the human race with incessant melodramatic dialogue. Lots of exclamation points! However, the story did keep me engaged. I wanted to see how it turned out.

Re-reading. This a more current republishing of Howard's original stories unmolested by editors hands as he wrote them. Deep themes about the individual vs society are explored in a fantasy world of his own making. Not at all the commercial, and watered down, character the media has produced over the many years for profit.

Book #2 in The Body Finder series and this one was even better than the first. The author, Kimberly Derting, is able to mix teenage love and drama found in schools with the incredible ability the main character has - the ability to sense dead bodies. I hope that there are more books in this series. I will be adding them to my classroom library.
