I've read this book several times, and it breaks my heart each time. This is the story of two families, in particular two boys, growing up in Afghanistan. More than any novel I've read in a long time, it speaks to our love for our children and our common humanity. Not to be missed.

"Prufrock" is, without a doubt, my favorite poem. Now all I need to do is find an Eliot anthology so I can read some more of his work :)

** spoiler alert ** I read Smiles to Go by Jerry Spinelli which is a fictional book about a pretty normal teenage boy who gets hung up on the decay of a proton. The main character’s name is Will Tuppence. Will is a freshman in high school. He has two best friends, Mi-Su and BT, and an annoying little sister named Tabby. The conflict of the story is Will and reality. He still can’t comprehend the fact that the proton died. Why does that matter, though? That’s such a stupid conflict. All Will is interested in is chess, skateboarding, astronomy, Mi-Su and monopoly. It gets really boring and really uninteresting. At the end, Tabby takes Will’s skateboard and gets injured. Where does that ending even come from? It was so obnoxious. I thought the quality of writing was pretty dreadful for this book. He couldn’t relate to the writer at all. Who has heard of a chess-playing-star-loving-skateboarding-super-geek? Last time I checked, no one has. I chose this book because it was by Jerry Spinelli and I loved Maniac Magee. I disliked this book because the lack of excitement, and that the author poorly connected to the reader. If you compared this book to Maniac Magee, it’d be like comparing the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who were 43-119, to the 2001 Seattle Mariners, who were 116-46. Yeah, that’s how bad Smiles to Go compared to Maniac Magee. I would not recommend this book but I would recommend any other books by Jerry Spinelli.

Finished this book with the girls. As I read the biography of the author, Madeline suggested we should read The Trumpet of the Swan, since we've read two books and enjoyed them. Madeline didn't want to read about a mouse when we started, but she grew to like the book, and both her and Ella enjoyed the book. They were surprised by the ending, they and I expected Stuart Little to return home and to find the Margalo.

My favourite book at school for English Lit. and I've re-read it a few times since then.

Recommendation: Borrow and read if you are over 30 It's essentiually a book that aims to chronicle Indian history post-independence. The book, which non Indians and possibly many Indians below the age of 30 might find more riveting than those belonging to an older generation, is written in an extremely reader friendly manner (no extended footnotes and dense official document extracts) but somehow seems fails to capture the imagination. One can understand that the writer would have been burdened with a certain space constraint but he surely could have focused a little less on Nehru and Indira and a little more on other important characters like say NTR, Bal Thackeray, Vajpayee or Annadurai. Kashmir is another area which the author spends a lot of time on but yet again a large chunk of it is devoted to Sheik Abdullah and very little to kashmir in the last 20 years. Similarly the Punjab problem I thought was dealt with rather perfunctorily and does not capture the fear that India lived with at the height of the Sikh militancy. While there is lots of interesting trivia there is lots of pointless detail as well and all in all I think this book could have been half the size and still done the job. PS The chapter on entertainment is really bad as is the one on sport in India.
