Disappointing. The well-drawn characters all prove to be futile and irrelevant, and the postured narrative cynicism ultimately effete and empty.

This book was suggested by two people in my book group. It is rare that two of us bring the same title to our decision making meeting. So of course, it went on the must read list for the year. I am very glad I read this. Hegland has invented a world much like ours, but with one tragic difference - the world as we know it has disappeared. It is not clear what has happened, but something has gone terribly wrong. Hegland makes this seem very possible. I am not sure what my reaction would be to a change this momentous. However, I would hope that I would be able to cope as well as Nell and Eva ultimately do. If you are interested in how the world might react to a major shift in lifestyles, this book is for you. If you saw the movie Testament with Jane Alexander and liked, you should read this book. If you like a story that slowly draws you in until you can't stop read - this book is definitely for you.

It's not Phillips' best book. I never really chemistry between the protagonists, there were side characters who could have been cut, and it could have been edited tighter. But I liked the heroine a lot--more than many reviewers on amazon. I didn't find her wimpy, maybe because I don't think being nice means wimpy. I get tired of every heroine on the planet being modeled after Elizabeth Bennett--there are Anne Elliotts in this world too. The hero was harder to *get* however, so... I think they would have made better friends than lovers. But the key side characters were great--not only quirky and fun, but often complex and well drawn, right down to the chilly executive who ends up in jeans in their kitchen, learning to make rosettes from their rude street-kid-cook. Everyone's moving forward and evolving and for the most part those evolutions felt believable (though accelerated, for the sake of the book's timespan.) Phillips' is a really solid, solid writer. Maybe her books are formulaic--I haven't read enough of them to know--but she has some very serious writing talent. Even when she's mediocre, she's better than most writers.

I love this book. I read it in high school and loved all the symbolism. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!!!

Every character is obnoxious. A giant typhoon or earthquake killing every named person in this novel would have improved it.

I was hooked on her writing. They are researched history books with the character experiencing the events. This book is one of my favorites by her.

This was still very good fun, but I just didn't think it was quite as good as the previous ones in terms of character development and plot. The history (U.S. Ohio River to Mississippi) was very interesting, though.
