I'm so sad this book is over! It was one of those stories that I couldn't read fast enough, but never wanted to end. It was sad to read about what Nicholas had suffered, but it was Bethie's tortured past that really touched me. Nicholas was so patient with her. He made sacrifices to ensure she felt safe. I loved that there was a child involved, and that he cherished the baby too. Nicholas Kenleigh is one of my favorite heroes now. Great read!!

WOW. I've been anxiously wanting to read this book ever since I saw Ishmael Beah appear on the Daily Show back in February. A coworker finally loaned it to me this week and I finished the thing in about 3 days. The book is about Ishmael's childhood growing up in Sierra Leone during the civil war. He describes his family, friends and young innocence. All of it is quickly taken away and he's pressed into the army as a child soldier at 13 years old! Parts of it are raw, intense and heart breaking. But it's a book that I feel must definitely be read as it shines some light on a part of the world that most people don't pay attention to or know much about.

While it didn't hit me as hard as Anthem, the ride I went on while reading this was incredible. I think as I've gotten older and more jaded the concepts of glorifying capitalism have become less of a concern of mine, but the elevation of ones self, driving ambition, and a great middle finger to the mediocrity of the masses (heh) have always been of paramount importance.
