A quaint tale with lots and lots of f bombs. Good humor for parents who are struggling with kids who don't go to sleep on schedule. Quick read, although I was on the hold list for months, I think it must have resonated with many parents. :-)

It was fun learning more about Janis Joplin, who also attended my alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. It was also interesting to contrast her with my parents, who are only 7 years older than she would have been, but who conformed much more readily to 1950s Texas standards of behavior. It's easy to forget sometimes that our elders also consist of people who were wild and crazy in their youth (if not for their whole lives)! Anyway, Janis's story was fascinating and sad, and it makes me want to listen to all her music again.

Betsy Byars neatly succeeds at building a suspenseful plot around a very likable (though highly unusual!) family in this book, one of many about the Blossoms. Betsy Byars's fiercely independent kids in the story are as compelling as always, and a part of me wonders perhaps why this did not taste of Newbery success in 1987. The Not-Just-Anybody Family is very much worth the read.
